HKUST LAUNCHES NOTEBOOK OWNERSHIP PROGRAM ’99

Students at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will be able to purchase notebook computers at a handsome discount under the newly launched HKUST Notebook Ownership Program ’99.

The Program is the University’s latest initiative to enhance information technology (IT) in education and equip students with the latest IT skills to meet the challenges of the IT revolution in the new millennium.

HKUST has developed a computer-intensive environment from the onset with its network connected to virtually every location on campus. Student-computer ratio is approximately 5:1. In an attempt to promote online education, a new Cyberschool of IT will open in February 2000 to offer web-based courses to HKUST students.

Under the Program, Chevalier (OA) Limited will offer four models of Toshiba’s Portege and Satellite notebook computers with free bundles at around $8,800 to $16,500, a 40-50% discount over retail price.

The Program is open to all full-time students and staff of HKUST on a first-come-first-served basis. Each person is entitled to buy only one computer. Priority will be given to undergraduates who can also apply for a 12-month interest-free installment plan. One-year warranty service will be provided.

Demonstration booths will be set up from 25 to 29 October, and two briefing sessions will be held on 28 October.

In addition to the Program, Compaq desktops will also be offered at a special rate.
