From the 17th century, 39. farmers who wanted to supplement their income from milk – or who just needed a source of sweetener that was better and cheaper than sugar or molasses – drilled small holes in the maple trees during the brief weather window between winter and spring. The farmers called the maple tree stands “sugar bushes” and hung buckets under the drilled holes. Every day or two – depending on how fast the sap was running out of the trees – the farmers would 40. out the buckets into larger containers or tanks and haul the watery substance to a “sugar house” usually built in the woods. Here’s where the magic happened.

Little is known definitely about where and when people first started to use forks for eating. As far as we know, they first came into use in Europe in the eleventh century, when the wife of the ruler of Venice started to use one. ( 49 ) . At first the use of forks was restricted to kings and nobles. Made of gold or silver, they were symbols of luxury and high social status. Some were even decorated with precious stones. ( 50 ) .

It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup because sap is about 98 % water. Sugar makers boiled off most of the water over a wood fire – what they were left with was brown sweet syrup. Some sugar makers heated the sap 41. , turning it into crystallized sugar. Over time, the industry evolved so much that companies from Quebec to Vermont produced ready-made “ 42. ,”essentially giant frying pans with fire boxes built underneath.

The use of forks spread slowly inside Italy and even more slowly to other countries. Although a king of England is known to have possessed seven forks as early as 1307, ordinary Englishmen continued to think them ridiculous and made fun of anyone who used one. ( 51 ) . In France, for example it didn’t happen until the end of the eighteenth century, about the same time as people started to use individual plates and glasses.

These days, most serious sugar makers have foregone labor-intensive buckets, The way someone uses a fork can tell you the country he comes from. ( 52 ) . English people would hold their knife in their right hand and the fork in their left with the prongs pointing down. ( 53 ) .

43. tubing systems. The holes bored in sugar maples in early spring are usually made with a cordless drill. Sugar makers insert small plastic spouts into the holes and 44. the spouts to huge webs of plastic tubing that route the precious sap into large tanks. Many of these sugar bushes even have vacuum systems that suck the sap out of the trees to increase 45. , along with furnaces and filters that remove some water prior to boiling. The technology has changed dramatically, but in 46. the process is virtually the same. Collect sap and reduce over heat.

(A) These early forks had only two prongs, unlike most modern forks, which have twice that number

(B) This is regarded in England as good manners even though it can make eating more difficult

As the natural foods movement has picked up steam in recent years, maple syrup has become, along with honey, an increasingly attractive 47. to processed cane sugar. Some maple syrup 48. use the liquid sweetener as a substitute for sugar in everything from cakes to stir fry. And let’s not forget the Master Cleanse diet – more accurately a fast – in which people eat nothing for days on end, subsisting only on a drink made of water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup.

(C) If you see someone at a dinner party holding a fork in his right hand with the prongs pointing up, you can be sure that person is American

(D) She considered herself too delicate to pick up meat and other tough foods with her fingers

55. According to this passage, if a young person continues to act as a child, all of the following are possible consequences except __________.

第五大題: 閱讀測驗 (每題 2 分,共 32 分) 第 54 至 57 題為題組

How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.

(A) he or she could go to jail (B) he or she could go hungry

(C) he or she could live uncomfortably Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a

child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is improbable that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child—things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well known. A child finds pleasure in playing in the rain or in the snow. His first visit to the seaside is a marvelous adventure. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do as he wishes as he thinks older people are; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. His life is therefore not perfectly happy.

(D) he or she could continue to be taken care of by parents 56. Who does the author think is the happiest person?

(A) One who is old enough to stop working. (B) One who enjoys each age without regrets. (C) One who is forever young.

(D) One who has a family to take care of. 57. What is the main argument of this article? (A) Getting old is a horrible prospect. (B) There is no age that is happy. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he becomes free from the

discipline of school and parents, but at the same time he is forced to accept responsibilities. He can no longer expect others to pay for his life necessities, but has to work if he wants to live a comfortable life. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of seeing himself make steady progress in his job and of building up for himself his own position in society.

(C) Every age has its benefits and its problems, but all can be enjoyable. (D) Only the young are truly free to enjoy life.

第 58 至 61 題為題組

Education is the means by which a generation of mature adults passes on its collective knowledge to its offspring. In the surface this may seem like a straightforward undertaking; however, a closer examination of the subject reveals that such statements define the depths of this intricate subject only superficially. Education theorists have long been at work refining the methods by which children in society are to be trained. However, instead of coming to an agreement on the best way to teach our youngsters, a number of conflicting approaches have been put forward as the most suitable for developing minds. Although the sheer number of different methodologies prohibits a detailed discussion, a large number of approaches that have been proposed during the past century fall into two broad categories: theoretical and experiential.

Old age has always been thought of as the worst age to be, but it is not necessary for the old to be unhappy. With old age should come wisdom and the ability to help others with advice wisely given. The old can have the joy of seeing their children making progress in life; they can watch their grandchildren growing up around them; and, perhaps best of all, they can, if their life has been a useful one, feel the happiness of having come through the battle of life safely and of having reached a time when they can lie back and

rest, leaving others to continue the fight. Educational professionals who favor a more theoretical approach to education insist upon rigorous mental training. Under this theory, classrooms are highly structured environments, with desks aligned in neat rows and time schedules carved in stone. Teachers are primarily lecturers and students, the passive recipients of knowledge, can be required to memorize large amounts of information. Thus, while they may become quite 54. According to this passage, what is unique about childhood?

(A) Children have complete control over their lives. (B) Children can make their own decisions.

(5)

instructor, they may be less apt at the application of these formulas to random practical situations.

(B) Educations must employ a combination of methods to meet a variety of circumstances.

In direct contrast to the theoretical approach, experiential methods feature a “ hand on” style of learning. Teachers using experiential methods are more like guides than pure lecturers. Children are much more active, gaining knowledge through trial and error, experimentation, and interaction with real objects in the classroom. Not that learning is limited to the classroom environment for experiential teachers. In fact, teachers who favor this method often take their students on field trips. For example, a class studying astronomy might more likely be found in a grassy field gazing up at the heavens than in a musty classroom staring at a textbook.

(C) Researchers hope to discover a pure method of education. (D) A minority of teachers favors an experiential teaching style.

第 62 至 65 題為題組

Sword in hand, the black knight leapt forward and in one mighty swing fell the king’s loyal guard. The king backed away, a feeling of helplessness washing over him. Suddenly, one of the knight’s henchmen, spiked mace in hand, appeared behind the king, trapping the ruler. Nowhere to go. Nothing to do. The king knew it was over.

Of course, it is unlikely that “pure” examples of either approach can be found in any school system. Rather, teachers tend to make use of both methods depending on the requirements of the educational situation.

I pushed the chess piece over in disgust. Another game, another loss. This was becoming monotonous. I played chess with my grandfather maybe once a month. And almost every time I lost. He knew the moves and maneuvers, the counters and the attacks. But most of all, he knew me. “Good game, Robby,” my grandfather said. He stood, fixed his silk shirt and Brooks Brothers tie, and winked. “You had a couple of good moves, but you’ve got to keep thinking.” He gave me a hug. “Good game.”

58. How is the information in the passage organized?

(A) By listing the advantages and disadvantages of different methods.

(B) By contrasting two general approaches. Whenever we’re together, my grandfather and I always seem to end up playing chess. We usually play late into the night, listening to classical music and discussing world events. I can remember one particular night, when we played until three-thirty in the morning. (C) By detailing the development of educational theories.

(D) By explaining the stages of development of a theory.

59. In paragraph 2, what does the author mean by the phrase carved in stone? It was like any other game. Each move took my grandfather three or four minutes. He carefully planned each action, contemplated every possible countermaneuver, and then double checked to see if he forgot any conceivable move. That is why he’s so difficult to beat and why he’s so difficult to play. He thinks like he plays: careful, deliberate, and precise. It’s taken me a while to understand him. In fact, it’s taken me a while to understand myself. Not everything can be seen as easily as in chess. Not all moves are as predictable; not all decisions are as defined. As I look back on the games I’ve played with my grandfather, I wonder if he knows how much he’s really taught me. That patience is learned; that concentration is developed; that persistence pays off in the end. I wonder if I should tell him.

(A) Time is allotted for sculpture and other artistic pursuits. (B) Desks are often made from stone.

(C) Class time is rigidly controlled.

(D) Class schedules are more flexible than seating arrangements.

60. According to this passage, which of the following would most likely be a feature of experiential education?

(A) An in-depth investigation of mathematical formulas. (B) Memorization of classic literature.

(C) Careful reading of a history textbook.

(D) Applying geometry to the building of a classroom bookcase.

61. Which of the following can be implied from the passage? 62. What is this article mainly about? (A) Experiential education is the most widespread method of education used in the

United States.

(A) How to play chess. (B) A marvelous game of chess. (C) The author and his grandfather. (D) The author’s opinion on chess.

(6)

63. What does “monotonous” in the second paragraph imply?

(A) varied (B) repetitious (C) singular (D) understandable 64. We can NOT infer from the article that the author’s grandfather _____. (A) teaches the author to play chess (B) is a great chess player

(C) is far from an impulsive person (D) is quite harsh on his grandson 65. According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE?

(A) It doesn’t take the author’s grandfather much time to make every move while playing chess.

(B) Playing chess does no good to the relationship between the author and his grandfather.

(C) Knowing one’s rival well is also helpful in winning a game of chess.

(D) While playing chess, the author and his grandfather do nothing but play chess attentively.

第 66 至 69 題為題組

Among all the prestigious universities in America, Harvard is no doubt the top one. Everyone has heard of Harvard, and therefore everyone who wants the best for themselves or their children will have Harvard in their list of goals, often in first place. So Harvard receives about 20,000 applications for 1,900 undergraduate places. Many, if not most, of these applicants will be the first in their high school classes, and offer a range of other talents besides: athletic, artistic, musical accomplishments, a strong record of community service, glowing recommendations from teachers, community leaders, and even famous people. How can Harvard decide whom to accept, whom to reject?

Harvard, and other great universities in America, try to create a group of students with strong and diverse characteristics. That is why they seek applicants from varied backgrounds-different races, different countries, different economic and social groups. If you are not the typical Harvard applicant, you already have an advantage. The admissions committee next seeks students with deep interests and commitments, both in their studies and in the rest of their lives. The application may list activities and awards that claim the student has such qualifications, but how does the committee know these are not just paper commitments, undertaken only with college admissions in mind? They count on the student’s essay to provide the evidence.

Students and their parents know this, of course, so they often prefer not to depend on

on the web and elsewhere. College, for their part, do their best to weed out applications that have benefited from such high-priced assistance, and find the essays that come from the student’s own heart and speak in the student’s own voice. They expect high school guidance counselors, and possibly parents or friends, to read the essay and offer advice, but they are quite skilful at determining whether anyone besides the student has actually done the writing. If you are from a non-English speaking country, you must walk a fine line. The committee will try to decide if you can use English well enough to express yourself and do college level work. But unless they know that you have lived and studied in an English-speaking country, an essay in polished English with no grammatical errors at all will show that you have not written it yourself. So do not aspire to perfect English.

66. What is the main purpose of this article? (A) To introduce the history of Harvard. (B) To explain how to apply to Harvard.

(C) To show how admissions assistance services work. (D) To give parents tips on how to help their children.

67. _____ give(s) rise to the prosperity of services offering admissions assistance. (A) The importance of students’ essays

(B) Suggestions from Harvard’s admissions committee (C) The deterioration of students’ writing ability (D) The importance of perfect English

68. Harvard’s admissions committee _____. (A) prefers typical Harvard applicants

(B) will evaluate foreign students’ English ability

(C) does not take applicants’ academic performance into consideration (D) relies on admissions assistance services to decide whom to accept 69. Which of the following can NOT be inferred from this article?

(A) A brilliant student with a variety of talents is more likely to be accepted. (B) A recommendation from Bill Gates might be helpful.

(C) Advices from teachers or parents on writing an essay are not suggested.

(D) The admissions committee values the essay that is self-revealing, and shows passion and dedication.
