There is an alternative way to promote the goods showing up in large retail outlets around the globe----in-store television advertising. By advertising directly in store, retailers can remind customers of commercials they have already seen, introduce new products, promote sale items, and give more information about goods in the store. Plus, about three-quarters of buying decisions are made in the store, so this advertising tip is more and more appealing.

Take the world’s biggest retailer, Wal-Mart, for example. It is leading the way in this new method of reaching customers with TV screens in more than 3,000 stores across America. About 140 companies pay to advertise on these screens, and the data show that sales have risen two percent. Not until you consider that Wal-Mart brought in over NT$11 trillion in 2007 may a two-percent sales increase seem like much.

Another example is Carrefour. It has already been equipped with in-store television in Poland and Brazil. In China, an advertising agency called Focus Media is helping stores install this service. Over the years, companies have learned some things about it. For instance, shoppers are unlikely to stand still for a traditional thirty-second commercial; spots of five to fifteen seconds work best. Besides, ceaseless ads tend to frustrate potential buyers.

(3)

In-store television advertising only started gaining popularity in the early 2000’s, so despite a few statistics, no one is sure how well it works. As it stands, about eighty percent of companies who advertise this way renew their contracts. So it seems that in-store television advertising could be here to stay.

51. What can’t in-store television advertising do according to the reading? A. It can’t help introduce new goods.

B. It can’t promote sale items.

C. It can’t provide customers with more information on products. D. It can’t help people buy things at a lower price.

52. Which of the following statements is true?

A. War-Mart has more than 140 companies in the US. B. No other company is larger than Carrefour.

C. Focus Media is a Chinese retailer.

D. Generally speaking, customers can’t be patient to stand still for the commercial for thirty seconds in the store.

53. In which section of newspaper can this article most likely be seen? A. Entertainment. B. Education. C. Business. D. Column.

Few people would argue with the claim that happiness is our preferred state of being. Given the choice, most of us would surely choose pleasure over pain. However, in recent years, there has been a movement which suggests that a little bit of sadness in our lives isn’t so bad.

It was in the 1990s that the promotion of happiness was a big business. The researchers found evidence of happy moods having many positive effects on the body and mind. Thus, a host of writers and entrepreneurs took advantage of this discovery, flooding the market with books and magazine articles promising to make people happier.

Now, though, there is some good news for those who are fed with being told to smile all the time. After years of being seen as a feeling to avoid, sadness is starting to catch on. Eric Wilson, publishing a book called Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy, argues that the obsession with happiness, particularly in America, has caused a widespread disregard for the value of sadness. He points out that without gloomy feelings, many of the world’s artists, like Beethoven and Vincent van Gogh, would have been deprived of their muse.

Results of recent research help back up the view that a moderate dose of negativity is not necessarily a bad thing. A worldwide survey was conducted, in which over 100,000 people were asked to rate their happiness on a scale of 1 to 10. Those who rated themselves happiest, at 9’s and 10’s, were on average not as successful, in terms of career or education, as those who rated themselves as an 8. This suggests that, for those near the top of their profession, a certain amount of dissatisfaction helps them go a long way. Instead of being happy with their lives, they drive themselves on to achieve more.

The message to bring home from this whole happiness versus sadness debate is not that there is anything wrong with feeling happy. It’s more a case of striking a balance between a healthy dose of cheer and a little bit of sorrow. So next time, you’re feeling down, look on the bright side and remember that sadness isn’t all bad. In the grand scheme of things, it brings its own

benefits and adds a creative color to our lives.

54. According to the reading, what happened in 1990s? A. The positive effects of gloominess were first examined. B. People started to advocate the importance of happiness. C. A movement against gloominess appeared.

A. By giving some useful tips.

B. By using a quote from a famous person. C. By clarifying an important point.

D. By sharing a funny personal story.
