VI. Reading Comprehension (16%)

[A] Now that computers have become necessary in our daily lives, they have opened a new door for criminals. Ten or twenty years ago, computer crime was limited to those few ingenious hackers who showed their skill by illegally entering government and corporation databases. Their crimes were often driven by mischief and curiosity. Today, the stakes are much higher.

Nowadays, every company and almost every household has its own computer. Computers hold invaluable financial and personal information, and the Internet provides easy access to this data. Furthermore, computer criminals no longer work for mischief. They log on to computers to steal credit numbers, client information and business plans. They snatch identities and commit fraud, often extracting high amounts from their victims.

Unfortunately, this is not the only crime in the increasing wave. The other main computer criminal is not concerned with theft. Instead, he unleashes data destruction. This criminal releases dangerous viruses that can corrupt computers’ files and dismantle entire networks. This can cripple businesses and organizations. Imagine what would happen if a virus destroyed all of a hospital’s medical records or even shut down machines that are keeping people alive! In today’s world, this is a scary possibility.

(D) learn more about computer security and join others to fight against computer crimes [B] It all started with a few photos posted on Facebook, and it ended with one of the biggest controversies ever to hit the military in Taiwan. On March 29, a lieutenant colonel by the name of Lao Nai-Cheng took a group of family members and friends on a tour of a military base in Taoyuan. Unfortunately, Lao did not have permission to do this, and he allowed these visitors to enter areas that were specifically off-limits to non-military personnel. Even worse, many of the visitors ended up taking photos of the advanced military equipment there.

One of these visitors was Janet Lee, a local celebrity. Lee posed in front of an Apache helicopter, smiling broadly and giving a whimsical one-legged salute to the camera. She was also photographed in the cockpit of one of Taiwan’s most advanced helicopters, the AH-64E Apache. A picture showed her grinning happily while also clearly showing the instrument panel inside the helicopter. Later that day, Lee posted these photos on her Facebook page, and the controversy began.

Despite the gravity of her actions, Lee at first remained defiant, insisting that she had not done anything wrong. It appeared that the military was also trying to sweep this scandal under the rug. However, as the pictures spread across the Internet, public anger over these security lapses grew. Taiwan’s media picked up the story, and soon the headlines were filled with vivid details about “Apache-gate,” as the scandal came to be known.

Later, Apple Daily published a picture of Lao wearing an Apache helicopter helmet at a Halloween party. It was later learned that Lao had taken the helmet out of the base without official permission.

In the days that followed, several apologies were made. Janet Lee eventually apologized and offered to volunteer for the military. Her suggestion, however, was later turned down. Lao’s father, a former deputy chief-of-staff in Taiwan’s army, bowed deeply and apologized with tears in his eyes for the damage his son had done to the nation and the military.

Although it was later revealed that several others, including some of Lao’s superiors, had also taken groups on unauthorized tours of military bases, it was decided that Lao should be discharged from the military within a year.

In the end, a pilot’s once promising career came to an abrupt end, and the reputation of Taiwan’s military was seriously damaged. It can only be hoped that Taiwan’s military can learn from this lesson and be more cautious in the future.
