MULTIMEDIA AND COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN IN THE UNIVERSITY
Animation, video clips, hypertext, sound and computer graphics -- these are some of the powerful multimedia tools used at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for teaching and research. To demonstrate some of the uses of the latest multimedia in an academic
setting, faculty members will present their work at a special session for media representatives on 1 February (Thursday).
Dr Avi Naiman (Computer Science) will describe activities in the Graphics and Music Experimentation (GAME) Room. Teaching in this postgraduate research laboratory focuses on computer-graphics, user-interfaces and computer-music programming.
Hong Kong’s first multimedia facility dedicated to teaching physics is called the Active Phyics Learning Environment. Professor Nelson Cue, Head of the Department of Physics, will explain how lecture, recitation, and laboratory activities can be combined in a single session, making the learning of physics easier and more enjoyable for students.
Dr Kar Yan Tam and Dr Grace Au (Information and Systems Management) will show how they have combined 3-D modeling, video clips, graphics and sound to create a “virtual office” that teaches students how file management and other information systems actually work.
To demonstrate how corn uter-aided K
can be used in industrial researc , Dr Matthew Yuen (Mechanical Engineering) and design and computer vision techniques Dr Helen Shen (Computer Science) will describe their approaches to computer-aided garment design and pattern cutting.
The presentation session will be held in the function room of the G/F Chinese Restaurant at HKUST at 11:45am on 1 February, to be followed by lunch. Faculty members will also conduct tours of their laboratories on request.
