Most of you study “English” every year in secondary school. 56 How should you choose? We recommend that you look for courses that will teach you how to read critically and analytically.

We hope that by the time you arrive at college, you will have gone beyond the books you have been required to read into areas of your own interest. Authors vary in the social classes they explore, in the sort of characters they invent, and in how they tell a story. 57 In at least one area, let your reading be as deep as you can make it. For example, read five novels of one author and see how the formal explorations of fictional possibilities within the novels change in the course of the author’s life. 58 The important thing is to read as much as you can, to find authors that you enjoy and investigate their work, to browse in libraries and bookstores and pick up new books that interest you, and to think critically about how your favorite writers differ from each other in content and in form. If you enjoy poetry, memorize poems until you carry them around inside your head. 59 You cannot bring to college more valuable a possession than a mind well-stocked from reading. 60 Every good writer was a good reader first.

(1) Major cities all over the world are growing at a fast pace. Sixty-seven years ago, just 30% of the world’s population lived in urban areas, but today that figure is well over 50%. And it is projected that by 2050, 66% of all people in the world will be living in cities. With this rapid growth, cities are becoming increasingly crowded with buildings, road networks, and people. This has led to many people losing access to green areas and open spaces, especially in central districts. One city’s solution to this problem was to construct a long park in the sky, elevated above the busy city streets. In May of 2017, South Korea’s capital city of Seoul unveiled the Seoullo 7017 Skygarden.

The Skygarden was built on a former elevated highway that runs through central Seoul. Constructed in the 1970s, the road eventually became unsafe for its original purpose and was scheduled to be demolished. However, city officials had the idea of converting it into a plant-filled pedestrian walkway that could connect important areas and popular places around the central train station.

The Seoullo 7017 Skygarden covers a route extending for almost one kilometer and was built at a cost of around NT$1.5 billion. It features 24,000 plants and is open to the public twenty-four hours a day at no charge. The numbers in the name represent the years of its introduction. The original roadway was completed in 1970 and the new garden walkway opened in 2017, hence 7017. It is expected that it will not only appeal to the residents of the South Korean capital, but also be a major draw for tourists to the city. If the Skygarden proves to be a huge success, it may serve as a model for similar projects in other major world cities.

(2) You have a stuffy nose, a scratchy throat, and a pounding head. Is it a cold or the seasonal flu? The common cold and influenza, often called the flu, are both upper respiratory infections caused by a virus. Both infections are highly contagious, and they are often spread through close contact with someone carrying viruses. Since symptoms tend to overlap, it’s hard for most people to know for sure if they have the flu, but there are still some basic guidelines to help us to distinguish between cold and flu symptoms.

The “common” cold gets its name for a reason. Colds are the leading reason why people may miss work or school for several days each year. A cold usually starts with a runny nose, affecting mainly the nose and throat. The symptoms are usually mild and don’t result in serious health complications. Most cold-causing viruses prosper in low-humidity environments, so colds are indeed more common during the fall and winter seasons, though actually we can catch a cold at any time of the year. Unfortunately, no vaccine has been discovered or created that can prevent people from catching a cold until now.

The flu, on the other hand, can develop into a more serious illness like pneumonia. Unlike a cold, the flu is mostly seasonal and reaches its peak in the winter months. The flu usually starts with a dry throat and nose, and its symptoms are similar to those of a cold but more severe. Seasonal flu is caused by the influenza A, B, and C viruses. Since the active strains of flu viruses are constantly changing, a new flu vaccine is made every year. Therefore, getting a flu shot each year is the best way to avoid getting the flu.

64. Which of the following words can best replace the word “peak”? (A) Elevation.

(B) Treatment. (C) Popularity. (D) Summit.

65. Which of the following is NOT one of the similarities between a cold and the flu? (A) Both infections are caused by viruses.

(B) Both are easily transmitted to people nearby. (C) Both occur in the winter season only.

(D) Both will make people’s noses and throats feel uncomfortable.
