In 2002, usage of information technology (IT) in the business sector of Macao grew 3 percentage points compared with 2001, reaching an overall rate

^a

of 33%. Major purposes on usage of IT included archive, accounting and sales.

Travel agency showed the highest rate in all industries, to a level of 96%, up by 5 percentage points over 2001. Restaurant & similar establishment, which had a lower rate compared with other businesses, increased by 1 percentage point to 10%.

Similar to the findings in 2001, usage of information technology increases concurrently with the size of establishment. In fact, the rate of using computer was 96% for the large establishments with 100 or more workers, contrary to merely 28% for the small establishments with less than 10 workers.

USAGE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

IN BUSINESS SECTOR 2002 DSEC No. 1

Among the 3,697 establishments using computer, 446 of them used tailor-made computer programmes in their business operations. In addition, a total of 646 IT personnel were hired by these establishments and were responsible for “general customer support” and “computer programming”.

A vast majority of the establishments has a short history on usage of IT. Analyzed by year of usage, 76% have been using computer for 5 years or less, only 7% have been using computer for more than 10 years and most of them were hotels. Altogether, 16,267 computers and similar equipment were installed in those establishments, sharing an average of 4 computers per establishment.

Internet usage

The rate of Internet connection increased by 4 percentage points over 2001, to a level of 58%

for all establishments using computer. Analyzed by industry, Transport, storage & communications took the lead with 84%, followed by Hotel (81%) and Travel agency (80%).

With respect to the method of Internet connection, 58% of the establishments opted to use “dial- up modem” in connecting to the Internet and 38% chose to use “broadband”. Furthermore, major purposes of using Internet were dispatching and receiving e-mail, as well as on-line information search.

Web page/web site

In 2002, there were 294 business establishments reported having web page or web site, which

accounted for 8% of all establishments using computer. For the large establishments with 100 or more

workers, 36% had web page or web site, compared with only 5% for the small establishments with less

than 10 workers.

In the business sector of Macao, Hotel industry had the highest percentage of establishments having web page or web site, with 67%. On the other hand, the major purposes of having web page or web site included advertising and promotion, sales and gathering opinions.

Budget for information technology

Out of the 3,697 establishments using computer, 190 stated having a budget for information technology for 2003. Analyzed by size of budget, 148 establishments would reserve less than MOP 100,000, while 21 establishments would put MOP 200,000 or more and 14 of them were large

establishments with 100 or more workers.

By area of IT expenditure, most of the establishments would use the budget for “acquiring additional IT equipment”, “repair and maintenance”, as well as “acquiring additional IT software”.

Plan on usage of information technology

For those establishments not using computer, 84 intended to install computer in 2003; among which 36 establishments would connect to the Internet, 14 would set up web page or web site and 17 would reserve budget for IT.

For those establishments not intending to use computer in 2003, some considered that IT

provided “no business benefit”, some reported due to “lack of personnel familiar with using computer”.
