system and the body’s stress levels? Laughing! As more research results become available on laughing, it becomes apparent that we should all do it more often.

A recent study performed at a university in the United States showed that laughing helps blood vessels work more efficiently in the same way that exercise does. Doctors don’t recommend that people stop exercising, but instead suggest that everyone tries laughing for fifteen minutes a day. The researchers still don’t know why laughing is so healthy, however. Is it because beneficial chemicals are released from your brain when you laugh or because laughter exercises your abdominal muscles and lungs, and increases the amount of oxygen in your blood?

Another benefit of laughter is that it boosts the immune system by increasing the body’s disease fighting cells, which fight the viruses that cause colds and flus. Thus, people who laugh more get sick less often. Laughter can also lower blood pressure, and reduce stress hormones. Laughter causes the release of body’s natural pain killers, so people with

headaches and other pain feel better after laughing. In another study, nurses told jokes to some patients after surgery. The patients who were told the jokes reported less pain than patients who were not told jokes.

Many hospitals have laughter departments these days, and for children who are sick, some hospitals have clown doctors. They are not real doctors, but are actors dressed as clowns, with their faces painted white, bright red noses, colorful costumes and very big shoes. They have funny names, and they sometimes sing songs or perform magic tricks. It’s frightening for a small child to be sick in hospital because they are away from their home and family. In addition, they often don’t understand their illness. Clown doctors help the children laugh and feel happier while they undergo their treatment. Adult patients consider them a great help ,too!

Furthermore, laughter is also good for people who aren’t sick, for example, students. English is a very difficult language to learn, and it’s easy to be stressed when you are working so hard. Nevertheless, even a smile might help you relax enough to do better work. Try it now!

(B) Teenage depression can be a very serious problem, leading to long-term unhappiness and even suicide. Luckily, there are many signs of severe depression, so it is not difficult to detect the problem and take action before it’s too late. Let’s look at an imaginary blog from a

teenager. “Today was a bad day, just like all the other days this year. No one likes me, and I don’t like anyone. I still don’t feel like eating or doing the fun things I used to do, like

swimming, visiting my friends, and playing with my dog. Now, all I want to do is stay in bed and sleep. I wonder if feeling bad like this is ever going to end. Or do I need to end it

myself?”

This teenager’s writing shows many of the signs of being seriously depressed. For example, this teenager doesn’t want to do the activities that he once enjoyed. It is common that people who are depressed don’t want to do the things they used to find fun. Another sign is what seems to be a lack of energy, as evidenced by only wanting to stay in bed and sleep. The third sign is not having hope. As this teenager wonders if things are ever going to get better in his life, he thinks the way to end the unhappiness may be to end his life.

In addition to paying attention to unusual behaviors, psychiatrists ask people some important questions when trying to see if someone is depressed. By examining the answers, psychiatrists can tell if a person suffers from depression. Some typical questions are:

1. Do you have trouble sleeping at night or do you sleep for much longer than before? 2. Have you noticed a change in your eating habits?

(5)

3. Do you have feelings of hopelessness or do you want to hurt yourself?

Research shows that 10 to 20 percent of people will have depression at some time in their lives—a percentage that has risen rapidly in recent years. If you feel depressed, you are definitely not alone. Maybe your friends, parents, or even teachers feel depressed sometimes. Therefore, there is no shame in admitting that you may suffer from depression.

But, what can you do if you feel depressed? There are several good options. First, you can turn to your parents or other trustworthy adults for help. If they are unable to deal with your problems, they can help make appointments with psychiatrists and you can get professional help. If a psychiatrist believes you are depressed, he or she can provide counseling or medication that will help you feel better and lead a happier life.

On the other hand, if you know someone who is depressed, it is important to be a kind listener when that person talks about his or her problems. Sometimes people just want someone to talk with and to feel that they’re not alone. Other times, talking with those who are depressed is a good way to encourage them to talk to a psychiatrist.

Suffering from depression is not shameful at all. It can be helped if you are willing to express your feelings or turn to doctors for help. In addition, being a good listener can help your family or friends who suffer from depression feel better. Always keep in mind that someone’s depression can get better if you refuse to let silence and indifference get in the way of professional treatment.
