Smart and Secure Supply Chains:
Leveraging the Power of RFIO Technology
!\cIvances in inFormation technology have brought about many bl'eakLhroughs in supply chain management. Most recenLly, the development of continual wireless technology, coupled with ~"'ID (raelio-frequency identification), have presenteel yet Llilothel' innovation opportunity. These technologies, together with intelligent software systems, could provide revolutionary ways to run supply chains, ultimately providing security throughout the whole process.Radio Frequency ielentification (RPID) first appeared in tracking and access applications eluring the 1980s. These wireless AIDC systems allow for non-contact reading and are efFective in manufactul'ing and other hostile environments where bar code labels could not sUI'vive.
An RPID Workshop organized by the Logistics ancl Supply Chain Management InslilUte was held on 21 Pebruary 2004. The symposium was very successful, with more than 300 industry participants. Prof. Hau Lee, Thoma Professor of Operations, Information and Technology, Graeluate School of Business,

Message from the Department Head
The Spring semester is always a busy time with
classes, conFerences, student activiLies, etc. A
most significant event this spring has been the Raclio frequency identification
(RPID) symposium, with more than 300 industry
pal'Licipants. This also demonstrates the important contribution to this new technology macle by our clepartment.
The Depaltment's I'eseal'ch I'emains active with two faculty
members receiving the liE Transaction Paper Award. The
Department's research on "Decision Support System (DSS) for Daily Operations in a Container Terminal" is also shOI'L listed as a Finalist
for the Franz I~delmand Awal'd.
Our Department is active in fostel'ing the exchange of icleas with the
inclustries. Apart from the RPID symposium, 16 European executives
pl'esented theil' views in the "Chinese Business Strategies" discussion
forum held in March at the ST. Also, a forum "China at the Crossroad
of the Global Supply Chain" co-organized by HKUST, Stanford
University, China - Europe International Business School ancl
Einclhoven Technical University which will be held in April in Shanghai. Speakers from leacling inclustries are invited to present their views.
We are collaborating with the Business School in launching a MSc in Engineering Enterpl'ise Management (EEM) pl'ogl'am specially
tailored for technical professionals who are interested to clevelop a
career in management. The MSc (EEM) progl'am puts its emphasis
on scientific management. In particular, it focuses on striking a
balance between people management and bUSiness management.
Over the next several yeal's, we will be growing and recruiting more faculty members. This recruitment will strengthen the establishecl
industrial engineering ancl logistics areas of interest in the
department. This growth represents a significant development in our department. We believe passionately in the latter and will strive meet new challenges.
