(A) English has descended from the language spoken by Germanic invaders like

the Saxons and the Angles. The Angles spoke "Englisc," and it is from this word that the word "English" itself is derived. Over time, new words were coined from the languages of other invaders like the Norse and the French. Thus, English contains words like "anger" that come from Norse as well as words like "ire" (which also means "anger") derived from French.

Apart from words, English has also borrowed some of the rules governing these languages. For example, in French, plurals are formed by adding the letter "s"; hence, the majority of English plurals are also formed by adding an "s." However, few other English plurals adhere to the Germanic system. Thus, the plural of "man" is "men" and that of "ox" is "oxen." Sometimes, an English word is formed by combining words from two languages: the French word "gentle" and the Germanic word "man" together generate "gentleman"!

When used in different countries, English takes on the words, phrases, and styles peculiar to each place. In the mid of 20th century, when British ended the

colonization inIndia, they not only marked the new era of history, but also opened a new chapter of English. Indian language enriched English by giving it several words such as "loot" and "bazaar." Besides, the Indian waved the British goodbye

but said welcome to their language. Hinglish, a mixture of Hindi and English, is the

hybrid language prevails in India nowadays. Hinglish figures high in Indian

advertisements and movies. Even Indian writers like Salman Rushdie use Hinglish in his novels. Today, Indian English has a rhythmic tone of speaking due to the influence of various Indian languages with their natural rhythm.

Some linguists consider Hinglish and similar phenomena bad English, but others like the philosopher Ivan Illich believe that "language would be totally callous if it were totally taught." Although English has changed through contact with other languages, its origins are still Germanic.

(B) There are many reasons why tragedies have always been a favorite subject

for playwrights, but the most important one is that they can influence the human mind more than any other emotional content. This is perhaps the reason why tragic heroes, both in literature and in theater, are one of the most remembered and endearing characters to audiences worldwide. For example, Shakespearean tragic heroes like Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear and Othello are subjects of prominent theater groups the world over. These out-and-out tragic plays are performed more often than comedies and melodramas.

Another important factor that has helped to elevate the status of tragic plays among others is the fact that tragic plays, almost always, depict the lives of extraordinary men and women. While comedies are mainly concerned with the day-to-day lives of ordinary people, the protagonists of tragedies are often kings, queens, and noblemen who are supposed to be strong-willed and incorruptible. Perhaps it is the secret yearning of the masses to witness the moral fall of powerful people that makes tragedies popular. Conversely, tragic characters provide lessons for ordinary people to avoid causing tragic situations in their lives. For example, King Lear shows us the dangers of bad human judgment and Hamlet recounts how the prince exacts revenge with hesitation; Othello describes the dangers of envy and lack of trust while Macbeth speaks about the futility of hollow ambition.

Most people have the tendency to identify themselves with their favorite tragic heroes. They draw parallels between what they see in the plays and what they experience in real life. Thus, they often comfort themselves in the face of difficult circumstances, and gain a lot of moral strength to overcome adversities. Tragedies, in this way, have helped people determine the best course to be taken in life.

69. This passage deals primarily with ___________. (A) Shakespearean tragic heroes

seaweed; a dozen kinds of cold tea in a dozen different bottles—enter any convenience store in Japan, and you’re immediately struck by the great variety and quality of the packaging!

Japanese companies have been accused of over-packaging; but within the Japanese cultural context, that’s not really true. The Japanese tend to use more packaging because of a cultural emphasis on freshness and a lack of storage space at home. Moreover, they believe nice packaging adds value because it’s a strong signal of quality. What’s more, compared with Westerners, the Japanese are more connected with packaging as a symbol of appreciation, love and care. Packaging has, therefore, attained an important place in Japan’s economy. The packaging market is worth over ¥7.4 trillion. New packaging is introduced to Japanese store shelves at a rate of 20 percent per year, the highest rate in the world. In such an environment, a product has to have more than just a nice graphic design to differentiate it from its shelf-mates. The product has to speak to the consumer’s needs with both personality and practical value.

In this changing industry, nothing is really certain except one thing. You can be sure that the goods out there on display on the shelves of the convenience store will soon be looking rather different.

73.This passage is most likely taken from a _________.

(A) cookbook (B) consumer report (C) user’s manual (D) fashion magazine

74.Which of the following is NOT a reason for the Japanese to use more packaging?

(A) Packaging helps to keep food fresh.

(B) Packaging helps the Japanese to show appreciation.

(C) Packaging is a way to compete with Westerners in economy. (D) The Japanese consider packaging a symbol of quality.

75.The word “shelf-mates” in the second paragraph most likely refers to ______. (A) other products in the store

(B) co-workers on the job

(C) customers’ need for other products (D) other graphic designs on the package
