[B] It is common to see that children feel scared when they are having their temperatures __31___. Now, with the creative thermometer “So Sweet,” children can enjoy a different experience. It shows that people can never start __33_ early when it comes to practicing creativity. This design won the iF Concept Award in 2009, a competition where more and more young students majoring in design show their creative ideas to the international audience. With the encouragement to take part in the iF Concept Award competition by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, many students in Taiwan are now devoting themselves __34__ the most of their ample imagination. “Eat-Clean” is one such example. Producers then turned to the video-cassette rental market. In 2000, a production team which had __40__ the first cable TV channel for glove puppetry produced the movie Legend of the Sacred Stone. [A] Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is planning to take two months of paternity leave following the birth of his daughter. This sends a strong message to all would-be fathers to get involved in the earliest stages of their newborn's life. Zuckerberg is only taking half of the time Facebook grants to male employees for paternity leave. Nevertheless, it sets a positive example to men worldwide on the responsibilities of fatherhood. The Facebook CEO wrote on his own Facebook page: "This is a very personal decision. Studies show that when working parents take time to be with their newborns, outcomes are better for the children and families." He added: "We're excited to start this next stage in our lives."

Over the past few decades, more and more companies have been giving men fully paid paternity leave. However, many men appear somewhat reluctant to take advantage of this benefit. Technology companies are often in the forefront of looking after employees, but even their male employees have been hesitant to utilize the perk. Many male workers prefer to continue working out of fear of falling behind on projects or missing out on promotions. Just 2 per cent of businesses in the UK reported a significant increase in the amount of paternity leave taken recently. Chris Parke, an employment specialist from London, offered some advice for men who were unsure about taking paternity leave: "Be courageous," he said.

66. ( ) What have more companies been giving over the past few decades? (A) fully paid paternity leave (B) family planning advice

(C) promotions to fathers (D) bounses

67. ( ) What kind of example is Mark Zuckerberg setting?

(A) a bad one (B) a valuable one (C) a poor one (D) a positive one

68. ( ) Who is Mark Zuckerberg's strong message for? (A) hands-on fathers (B) would-be fathers

(C) have-a-go fathers (D) absent-minded fathers

[B] The period Chinese drama Nirvana in Fire (original title: Lang Ya Bang) is all the rage nowadays. The high production quality is impressive with well-choreographed action scenes, great costumes and beautiful scenery settings. And yes, even the CGI (computer-generated imagery) looks realistic. On top of that, the story is really interesting with revenge, political maneuverings, hidden identities, etc. So Nirvana in Fire is not just all eye candy, there is good substance to it as well.

Nirvana in Fire opens with an unnamed man waking up after having a nightmare of a

bloody battle. Later, the man is found quite mysterious, as he goes by three names (Lin Shu/ Mei Changsu/Su Zhe). He has a super long and complicated backstory.

The whole point of this backstory is that Lin Shu/Mei Changsu/Su Zhe is out for revenge against the people who framed his father. On the surface, Su Zhe seems like a peaceful I-will-not-harm-a-fly kind of person. Actually, he is a calculating man and a formidable opponent. Oftentimes, stories portray revenge as irrational and passionate, something done in the heat of the moment. In contrast, Su Zhe has methodically planned his revenge for 12 years. He doesn’t let his emotions cloud his judgment—to do so would be foolish, because then his enemies would easily defeat him.

So, you may still be asking “Is this the drama for me?” I would say, give it a try if you like action scenes, political intrigue, or The Count of Monte Cristo kinds of stories. If political intrigue bores you, then stay away. After all, most of Su Zhe’s revenge plan involves using palace politics! 69. ( ) The article is most likely taken from a (an) _____.

(A) scientific journal (B)history novel (C) film review (D) magazine on politics 70. ( ) The word maneuverings in the first paragraph can be replaced by _____.

(A) strategies (B)organizations (C) communities (D) rights 71. ( ) We can learn from the article that _____.

(A) The Count of Monte Cristo is a story about irrational revenge.

(B) Su Zhe has been plotting for years to exact punishment on his enemies.

(C) Nirvana in Fire is a drama telling how a man gets recovered from his bloody nightmare.

(D) The eye-catching settings rather than the storyline make Nirvana in Fire a hit. [C] Most city parks are places where you can escape from big, ugly structures of metal and stone. The Manhattan High Line is different. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this massive metal structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 to bring trains directly into factories and warehouses. It was hardly used after the 1960s, and much of it was torn down. However, one stretch remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming more and more upmarket as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly railway structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed.

But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. It holds an elevated park, with carefully tended gardens, a promenade and great views of the city. The idea to convert the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a community meeting to decide the fate of the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a half of wild flowers growing in the middle of the city, and they realized that the High Line had potential to become a park. There was growing interest in improving urban centers, and so the project quickly gathered momentum and funds for construction were easily obtained.

The first section of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like

(4)

balconies with wonderful city views. Where the rail line goes between buildings, trees are densely planted. Other sections have wide lawns and walkways planted with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years – a railway line overgrown with weeds.

(A) The closure of a train line. (B) Improving city transport. (C) Restoring a historical monument. (D) An unlikely place for a park.

73. ( ) Which of the following is NOT true about the High Line?

(A) It is situated above ground level. (B) Trains still use the line.

(C) It is now a popular park. (D) Only part of the line remains.

74. ( ) According to the passage, why did David and Hammond originally want to save the High Line?

(A) They were interested in improving the city. (B) They wanted to reopen the train line. (C) They thought it had historical value. (D) They thought it would make a good park. 75. ( ) The last paragraph emphasizes that the park is …

(A) varied in its design. (B) popular with tourists

(C) similar to how it used to be. (D) like natural countryside.
