香港科技大學是一所 -世界級的研究型大學，著重理學、工學、工商管理學三方面的人才培育及學術研究，並與工商界軍密合作。此外，科大的人文社會科學學院規模雖然較小，但極為優秀。科大現有超過440位教授，每一位都擁有博士學位，曾在世界一流的研女型大學任教，或於著名實驗室擔任高級研究職位。他們學識淵博，無論在教學、研究、或指導研究生及博士後研究員上，都有豐富的經驗。大學設有19個學系，分別隸屬四個學院理學院、工學院、工商管理學院及人文社會科學學院，每年招收約 1 ，860名本科生及560名研究生。所有教學及研究活動均以英語進行。科大擁有最先進的研究設備，努力開拓知識字頁域，發展高新技術 ' 協助香港和鄰近地區邁進二十一世紀。重要成果包括 : * 14工頁發明已取得專利(主要是美團專利) ，另外尚有 51 項在申請中; 女大學正與本地公司進行超過一百項合作項目或合同研究， 1998-99 年的總值達3 ， 600萬港元; * 有20多項正在開發階段或己商品化的新工業技帝時，可轉移工業界或投資者， *獲香港特別行政區政府撥款，並得到工業界的資助，科大設立8個合作研究中心，牽頭推動香港工業的發展，從事達到國際學術水平的科研項目 ; *工學院所設立的“工業聯盟"涵蓋 20多項核心技術，已有超過30 家公司繳費加入 ; *工商管理學院開辦不同類型的高級行政人員教育課程，協勛香港及跨國企業培訓管理人才，迎接商業環境轉變所帶來的挑戰; 工學院則開辦持續與專業培訓班，提高香港工業界人士的專業水平， *新成立的科大創業輔助計劃已為10問剛起步的科技公司提供資助。
