Distinguished Lecture in Science To Review Modern Geometry

Distinguished mathematician Professor Wu-chung Hsiang will deliver the fifth in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)‘s Distinguished Lecture Series in Science on Tuesday, IO March, at 3 p.m. in Lecture Theatre A (G044). Entitled “What Is Geometiy ?” the lecture will discuss progress in modern geometry and topology. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Born in Chekiang, China, Professor Hsiang earned his BA at National Taiwan University and his PhD at Princeton. Upon graduation he joined the faculty of Yale; in 1972 he returned to Princeton where he was a full professor, including Head of the Mathematics Department (1982-85), until joining HKUST in 1991.

Professor Hsiang is a member of the Academia Sinica Republic of China and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has held prestigious fellowships (Sloan Fellow, 1967-69; Senior National Science Foundation (NSF) Fellow, 1971-72; Guggenheim Fellow, 197576), published more than 70 papers, and delivered major addresses at professional meetings. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Amsterdam’ the University of Bonn? the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford. Professor Hsiang also serves on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Ma thema tics.

This lecture is part of the “Distinguished Lecture Series in Science” sponsored by HKUST’s School of Science in honour of the opening of the University. The series began in October 1991. Wolf Prize winner Professor Theodor Diener of the Maryland Biotechnology Institute of the University of Maryland will be the next speaker in April.

“The best way to learn is to learn from the best,” says Professor Shain-Dow Kung, HKUST’s Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and organiser of the lecture series. “We have invited the very best people in their fields. We hope to learn from them; we invite the public to come learn with us.”
