New Challenges For

Communications Teaching In

Science and Engineering

Prof Leslie Olsen, a leading authority in technical communication, will outline the challenges facing teachers of English for science and engineering, during a talk at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on Thursday, 5 March.

"There have been important developments in science and engineering classrooms and workplaces in the United States, developments which have significant implications for teachers of scientific and technical English," Prof Olsen said. "Technical education is becoming more team-and project-oriented, more concerned with professional ethics and environmental impacts, and now involves more varied types of communication."

Leslie A. Olsen is Professor and Director of the Technical

Communication Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She is a member of a multidisciplinary team redesigning the

curriculum of the university 's College of Engineering. The team is integrating project-based work, teamwork, communication, and concerns for ethics and the environment into engineering courses. Prof Olsen is the co-author of Technical and Professional

Communication for Non-Native Speakers of English (2nd Ed.) and is a regular contributor to leading academic journals.
