HKUST Business School to Launch Pre-Experience Master in

International Management In Collaboration with CEMS

The School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) will introduce a new pre-experience master’s program in international management in collaboration with CEMS - a global alliance in management education. The new program opens up a fast track learning opportunity for fresh graduates who seek advanced knowledge in management and practical experience in an international workplace.

The new program, named Master of Science in International Management (HKUST MIMT), is a one-year pre-experience master's program tailored for fresh graduates or those with less than two years of postgraduate work experience. It allows students not only to reap the latest academic knowledge required for career development, but also gain practical experience in the business world and to have extensive international exposure in a short period of time through the required international exchange and international internship.

The initiative follows the collaboration recently established by HKUST Business School and CEMS, under which HKUST Business School becomes the only CEMS member school in Hong Kong and the fourth member school in Asia. CEMS is a strategic alliance comprising 27 leading academic institutions, more than 70 multi-national companies and 4 social partners around the world. It is also a leader in the market for pre-experience master’s in management programs. Its Master’s in International Management (CEMS MIM) was ranked No. 2 in the world in 2011, and No. 1 for the 2009-2011 three-year average ranking by the Financial Times MIM ranking.

Professor Leonard Cheng, Dean of HKUST Business School, said, “The forging of close partnerships with international institutions has long been a key strategic thrust of HKUST Business School. By bringing together the best of HKUST Business School and CEMS, including their extensive networks, this collaboration will create synergy and inject a new energy into the region’s business education development.”

To commence in Fall 2013, the program is not just a response to the increasing market trend towards pre-experience master's programs, but also aims to prepare students to meet the needs of the global workplace with a unique multi-campus, multi-country learning experience. By leveraging on the CEMS' academic and corporate networks, overseas learning or working forms an integral part of the program.

Mr Chris Tsang, Executive Director of MBA/MSc Programs at HKUST Business School, said, “Students are guaranteed the opportunity to go on international exchange at one of the elite CEMS member schools in Asia, the Americas or Europe for one term. They can also turn their academic experience and theoretical knowledge into a professional, multi-cultural experience through the minimum 10-week international summer internship outside their home school or home country. This is a truly global opportunity to develop the students’ cross-cultural exposure and also to pave the way for an international career.”

Professor Bilian Sullivan, Academic Director of the HKUST MIMT program, added, “The program curriculum is carefully designed to include essential foundation courses, required courses on strategy and cross-cultural management, skill seminars and business field work project. The program offers extensive international exposure with an emphasis on business knowledge and practices in the Asian environment. Various teaching techniques and methods, such as simulation games, case discussions, interactive lectures, group discussions, and presentations, are used to enrich the intellectural pursuits for students and to help students move from theory to real world business applications".

Upon completion of the program, students will receive dual qualifications, including a Master of Science in International Management from HKUST and a Master’s in International Management from CEMS. Students will also benefit from the combined resources of HKUST and CEMS, including the extensive alumni network and career services.
