All children are different. However, they do have universal aspects that show up at various stages in their life. At the Middle Elementary Grades (MEG), most children share

(5)

three major aspects: the ability to see things from another person’s view, the desire for more advanced reading, and the need to develop a positive self-image.

MEG can be a challenging time for young people. They are not quite children, and yet, they are not quite teenagers either. One way to make this transition smooth is to introduce as much idyllic literature to children as possible. A book that fits this standard is Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White.

Charlotte’s Web is about the friendship between a young pig, Wilbur, and a female

spider, Charlotte. Like every pig, Wilbur is destined to grow up to be bacon. He has always wanted to escape his pen and experience the world. Meeting Charlotte allows Wilbur to realize that friendship can be selflessness and sacrifice. Charlotte craftily saves Wilbur from the butcher's knife by weaving the message ''Some Pig'' in her web above Wilbur's sty. Exhausted, the spider died afterwards. Wilbur kept her egg sac, and the next spring, hundreds of young spiders emerge. Charlotte’s spirit lives on.

Below is a discourse between the two friends.

"Why did you do all this for me?" Wilbur asked. "I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you. " " You have been my friend," replied Charlotte. "That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die."

Charlotte gives the reality of death in such a poetic and sweet way. It is the gentlest way to introduce and discuss death with a child.

Charlotte’s Web is a warm, tragic and triumphant story, readable by children. Each

character has their unique personalities. This makes it a rewarding reading experience for MEG children because they can now understand different points of view. Its complicated themes, such as sacrifice, death, and friendship, fulfill children’s desire for more

advanced books. Charlotte the spider, despite her size, is able to save Wilbur. This empowers children into feeling that they too can make a difference and develop a positive self-image.

63. Which of the following is NOT a universal aspect for MEG children? (A) They want to develop a positive self-worth.

(B) They can understand different points of view. (C) They are reluctant to do advanced reading.

(D) They have some aspects in common with each other.

64. The conversation between Wilbur and Charlotte teaches children ______ . (A) the value of wealth

(B) the importance of family (C) the worth of independence (D) the reality of death

65. Which of the following serves as a symbol for Charlotte the spider’s everlasting spirit?

(A) The Web. (B) The word in the web. (C) The egg sac. (D) The sty. 66. What is the last paragraph about?

(A) Analyzing why Charlotte’s Web is a quality book for children. (B) Addressing issues about life and death in a poetic way.

(C) Commenting on E.B. White’s writing style.

(D) Discussing the factors that make Charlotte’s Web a best-seller.

In order to communicate successfully you have to consider the cultural differences and the predominating communication process in individualistic and collectivistic cultures. It is best to explain these differences in terms of low- and high-context communication. Context has to do with how much you have to know before you can communicate effectively.

When workers from high-context and low-context cultures have to work together, problems often occur in the process of exchanging information. These problems can be classified as differences in “direction”, “quantity” and “quality”. For example, employees from high-context cultures like China and France adapt to in-group members, such as their good friends, family, and also to close colleagues (direction difference). They communicate with them intensively (quantity difference) and exchange specific/detailed information about many different topics (quality difference). The result is that every in-group member is constantly up-to-date with the facts around the business.

(6)

In contrast, people in low-context cultures like USA and Germany do not differentiate between in- and out-groups as much as those in high-context cultures. So their

communication is directed to personal characters and referred to situations (direction difference). They mostly communicate within their out-groups in a broad and diffuse way (quantity difference). Within communication they exchange information just to the necessary extent so that work can be done; they don’t discuss or exchange information constantly in their work environment and with colleagues (quality difference).

Ⓐ In China, communication tends to be very efficient because of their information-flow at work and in privacy. They discuss everything in advance and consider meetings as an official “ceremony” where the already commonly agreed decision will be

announced. This is important in cultures where “giving and keeping face” is the top priority in communication. The Americans and Germans, in contrast, inform the

participating attendants in a meeting about the hard and necessary facts. Ⓑ The decision-making process takes place within the meeting. To French, it is similar to their Asian counterparts. Ⓒ Explicit and detailed discussions would probably be seen as an insult because everything is obvious and easily understandable. Ⓓ

67. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage? (A) Cultural differences between the West and the East (B) Tips for intercultural communication

(C) High context versus low context (D) Direction, quantity and quality

68. Which of the words below is closest in meaning to “explicit” in the fourth paragraph? (A) considerate

(B) creative (C) confusing (D) clear

69. According to the passage, which of the following statements is FALSE? (A) In high-context cultures, people in the same group engage in intensive

dialogues when they have different viewpoints on a given topic and thus keep one another well informed of the latest development.

(B) Germans and Americans would share with their coworkers any information made available to them even if it might be irrelevant.

(C) Unlike in high-context cultures, the difference in the way people communicate is not that obvious between in- and out-groups in the low-context cultures. (D) Chinese discuss the same topic extensively on various occasions before they

announce their agreement officially at a meeting.

70. The four circles [Ⓐ Ⓑ Ⓒ Ⓓ] are possible places where the following sentence can be added to the passage.

They are also well informed before they meet each other.

Where will the sentence best fit to make a well-organized passage? (A) Ⓐ

(B) Ⓑ (C) Ⓒ (D) Ⓓ
