31/05/2009 Fun Run to Farewell HKUST President Paul Chu

The costume is reminiscent of the President making ice cream for the HKUST community using liquid nitrogen from the laboratory as cooling agent - at HKUST's 15th

Anniversary celebrations in 2006. This team eventually won the "Best Dressed Team" Award.

A group of HKUST students and alumni write goodwill messages to President Chu. Over 300 students, alumni and staff at the Hong Kong University of Science and

Technology (HKUST) took part in a Fun Run today (Sunday) to bid farewell to the outgoing President, and to raise funds for sports development at the university. 38 teams each with 10 members, dressed in fancy costumes, ran in a one-hour relay at the Fok Ying Tung Sports Center.

HKUST President Paul Chu, Vice-President Roland Chin, and Vice-President Yuk-Shan Wong also ran in the race, to the delight of all the sportsmen and spectators.

The event raised over $400,000 to further promote sports among the HKUST community. This includes setting up Sportsman of the Year and Sportswoman of the Year awards for both the students and the staff. The proceeds not only include the funds raised by the participating teams, but also donations from the Court and Council members, as well as from Prof and Mrs Chu.

The awards presented on the occasion were: "Fastest Team" (completing the highest number of laps within one hour), "Best Dressed Team" and "Best Fund Raising Team".

The "Fastest Team" went to the HKUST Athletic Team, completing a total of 53 laps. Meanwhile, the "Ice Cream Makers" Team became the "Best Dressed Team", and the Facilities Management Office Team was the "Best Fund Raising Team", with over $17,400 raised by the members.
