HKUST Receives Donations from Wong Chak Chui Charitable Foundation to
Boost Education and Research Development

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received donations from the Wong Chak Chui Charitable Foundation to boost its education and research development, and to set up the Wong Chak Chui International Enrichment Scholarship which supports financially needy students of the School of Business and Management to participate in overseas enrichment programs including international competitions, conferences and community projects. The Foundation also pledged its support to HKUST in hosting the 2016 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Hong Kong.
In recognition of the Foundation’s generosity and support, the University named the lecture theater of the Lee Shau Kee Business Building after the late Mr Wong Chak Chui.
A ceremony was recently held on HKUST campus. Among the guests at the ceremony were Mr Richard Wong Chung Tak, founder of the Wong Chak Chui Charitable Foundation, and his family members; Mrs Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, member of the Executive Council and Legislative Council; Prof Li Lu, Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs and Mr Ji Jianjun, Deputy Inspector, of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Prof Shum Kar-ping, Chairman of the IMO Hong Kong Committee; and Dr Philip Wu Po-him of the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation Limited. From HKUST, President Prof Tony F Chan, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Dr Eden Y Woon, Associate Provost and Dean of Students Prof Kar Yan Tam, and other senior management also attended the ceremony. In her remarks, Mrs Regina Ip mentioned she has known Mr Richard Wong for many years, and the Wong Chak Chui Charitable Foundation that Mr Wong set up in honor of his late father has donated to various tertiary institutions. Mrs Ip encouraged HKUST students to seize the opportunity of the newly established scholarship to broaden their horizons. She concluded by wishing the upcoming IMO event a big success.
Prof Tony F Chan expressed his wholehearted gratitude to the Foundation for its generous donations. “These thoughtful donations will give us a strong impetus for advancing our education and research development. The scholarship program will allow our students particularly those with financial difficulties to widen their global perspectives and sharpen their analytical skills.”
HKUST is also grateful to Mr Roland Wong, son of Mr Richard Wong Chung Tak, who has given his wholehearted effort in organizing the IMO, one of the most prominent international competitions for school students in mathematics. Students from more than 100 countries and districts will join the event in Hong Kong in 2016.
