While 46 the scope of the challenge, he added: “I think we’re all learning we can live without restaurants.”

There’s growing apprehension that restaurants have suddenly lost their appeal on a deeper level that will reverberate well after COVID-19 fades. Restaurants are among the hardest-hit businesses in the pandemic, and they’re one of the industries that will face major hurdles in getting customers back. Their plight is now a

high-profile issue: restaurants may need new layouts, with diners farther apart.

President Donald Trump included industry leaders on phone calls Wednesday about how to 49 the US economy. To fight off the plight caused by coronavirus, states will have to balance restaurants’ economic importance with the reality that things can’t return to 50

In today’s society, getting a college education is considered crucial for youngsters. Parents save money to send their children to the prestigious universities. 55 More and more students are facing bleak futures when they graduate from university. This raises the question of whether getting a college diploma is worth it.

One problem with college education today is rising tuition costs. Four-year degrees can cost as many as $60,000. 56 Nonetheless, students who study subjects like art and

philosophy often find themselves out of work even if they submit their resumes time after time. As a result, they are forced to go down to other alleys for employment. 57 With limited incomes, they have trouble paying back the loans, and their debt increases. Some people suggested that it would be better if a student didn’t attend college at all. 58

Of course, this doesn’t always hold true. Students who study subjects like engineering, medicine, or computer science can greatly improve their career with a college degree. 59 Students who want to study art, languages, or history should think twice about whether college is worth it for them. By doing this, they can save themselves a lot of discouragement and avoid financial difficulties.

(A) This isn’t a problem if students are able to be employed after graduation.

(B) Unfortunately, simply having a college diploma doesn’t guarantee a good career path. (C) In the end, deciding whether or not to enroll in college comes down to a student’s major. VI. Reading : Choose the best answer 16% (2 points for each)

[A]

Plastic waste is currently a 300-million-tons-per-year problem. That's equal to about 800 Empire State Buildings. The best answer for getting rid of plastic waste may lie with a kind of caterpillar.

Researchers discovered a waxworm in 2017. It seems able to eat through common types of plastic, including polyethylene. Polyethylene is a non-biodegradable type of plastic. In other words, it cannot break down naturally. It is the most commonly used plastic worldwide. A baby waxworm is called a larva. As a professor of biology at Brandon University, Bryan Cassone mentioned that its larvae eat a lot. A study was published on March 3 in the journal

Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The key is the micro-organisms, which are tiny living things similar to bacteria, in the waxworm's gut. They help the worms to consume and break down plastics.

Researchers studied the waxworm at Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada. They found that they’re able to digest polyethylene at rates never seen before, thanks to the micro-organisms in their stomachs. Traditionally, the caterpillars eat honeycomb. When the caterpillars consumed the plastic, researchers found there were more micro-organisms around when eating plastic than when the bugs ate honeycomb. In waxworms, polyethylene turns into a glycol, which is biodegradable.

Waxworms are not a perfect solution to plastic waste, however. Larvae are pests for bees. They naturally feed off their honeycombs. The worms run the risk of reducing bee populations. In turn, they reduce populations of plants and crops. Plants need the help of bees to grow. It's still unclear how the worm's plastic breakdown process works. We don't know how eating plastic affects its health, either. Cassone hopes that researchers can find and use what is in the caterpillars' gut bacteria. That way, it can be used to design better ways to rid plastic from the environment.

60. What is the main idea of this article?

(A) Waxworms usually feed on not only honeycombs but also polyethylene.

(B) The micro-organisms inside waxworms’ guts play a vital role in sustaining their lives. (C) Waxworms can break plastic into smaller units but this may harm the ecosystem. (D) The solution to 300 million tons of plastic every year lies in the waxworms’ stomachs. 61. How do waxworms eat plastic?

(A) They have strong mouths and teeth that turn the plastic into tiny bits. (B) They have polyethylene in their stomachs that break plastic down. (C) Their guts contain acid digestive fluid that dissolves the plastic. (D) The microbes that inhabit in the stomach decompose the plastic.

The world’s first cloned pig should be born soon, say researchers at Geron Bio-Med, a joint venture between the Scottish scientists who cloned Dolly the Sheep and the big American biotech company Geron, which has done pioneering work in the field of stem cell technology. They hope eventually to modify the technology in order to make other pig clones whose organs can be transplanted into humans. There are many more patients who need a transplant than there are donors’ organs available.

“What you want to be able to do for xenotransplantation–– for production of organs––is to knock out the genes that code for chemicals which trigger rejection in humans,” said Simon Best, the company’s Managing Director. “Crucially, the genes that code for pig retroviruses would also have to be removed. Cloning is the first technology that allows you to take away genes as opposed to adding them.”

However, the company says it still has some way to go before it perfects the basic cloning technology that will allow it to make a living copy of a pig. Although the cloning research has gotten as far as producing embryos, none of these have survived to term in their substitute mothers. Pigs give birth in litters of four or more and it seems that the normal embryos will not accept an implanted clone.

Chief scientific officer Professor Ian Wilmut, who helped to develop the cloning technology known as nuclear transferring, hopes to see cloned pigs later this year. He says: “We’ve recently gotten to the stage where we can produce embryos by nuclear transfer for the first time. We are transferring them into recipients in order to monitor their development for the first week, but it is clear we have a lot more research still to carry out.”

62. What is the best topic for this passage? (A) Production of Cloned Pigs.
