Background & Aim : Since the first inception in 1970s, the Objective Structured

Clinical Examination (OSCE) has become a widely used tool to assess clinical competence in medical education. However, OSCE has not been adopted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) education in Taiwan before. The aim of this study is to establish the first TCM-OSCE in Taiwan.

Materials & Methods : In 2012, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital established the first

TCM-standardized patient (SP) program in Taiwan and applied SPs with a TCM-OSCE.

Results : This study reports the implementation of the first TCM-OSCE in Chang

Gung Memorial Hospital, which includes collecting information, initiating a book club, consulting medical educators in western medicine, holding intramural conferences, establishing an OSCE committee, writing cases, training SPs,

administrating the OSCE, and receiving feedback from traditional Chinese medical students. Most students and SPs were satisfied with the assessment and appreciated the learning experience.

Conclusion : Based on the experience in 2012, the TCM-OSCE committee in Chang

Gung Memorial Hospital decided to incorporate the OSCE into the medical curriculum as a measure to assess medical students' clinical competences in their
