For example, Satsuki, the twelve-year-old main character in My Neighbor Totoro, has to care for her younger sister and do plenty of housework. That’s because their father is busy 27 while their mother is being treated in a hospital. Flying, moreover, is a repeated 28 in many of Miyazaki’s works. In a similar way, animal imagery found in many English expressions has given color to this language. One of the elephant-related expressions is “jumbo jets,” 34 the word for “elephant” in an African language. Later, people 35 it 35 the name of the first circus elephant in the U.S.A. Since more and more people were impressed by this elephant’s famous performances, “jumbo” 36 became a common name for elephants. Worse yet, if these heavy cell phone users discover that they forget to bring their cell phones 41 them, they will insist 42 returning home to get their “cells.” Although having a cell phone is nice, it is necessary that we use it wisely. IV. Matching (10%)

From Siri to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing at lightning speed. Nowadays, artificial intelligence is categorized as narrow AI (or weak AI) or general AI (or strong AI). 49 And the latter is the long-term goal of AI researchers. Strong AI is expected to outperform humans at almost every cognitive task. 50 Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, and some other big names in science and technology have all voiced their concerns about the potential risks posed by AI. Why is this topic suddenly hitting the headlines? The idea that strong AI can outperform humans at all cognitive tasks used to exist only in the realm of the human imagination and science fiction, 51 While some experts still believe that human-level AI is centuries away, most AI researchers at a 2015 Puerto Rico Conference estimated that this milestone would be reached by 2060. So it’s no longer a question of what benefits AI will bring to human beings, 52 We can control the planet now not because we are the strongest, fastest, or biggest creatures living on it, but because we are the smartest. 53 No one knows the answer for certain. Giant technological breakthroughs always cause unease, for history has proven time and again that well-intended inventions might end up as deadly and destructive weapons if they get into the wrong hands. Stephen Hawking once told BBC, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” It looks like the world’s biggest brains want to get all of us to really think about where the science and technology is heading and to make sure that other voices are also heard along the way.

(A) but thanks to recent breakthroughs, many AI milestones have been reached decades earlier than previously predicted.

(B) The former is designed to perform narrow tasks like facial recognition and Internet searches.

(C) If we are outsmarted by AI, will we keep dominating a world where robots no longer need us?

(D) but rather of when it will become a real threat to the very existence of human beings. (E) However, the development of artificial intelligence has come under attack recently.

V. Reading Comprehension (14%)

(1) “Mother Tongue” refers to the language that one learns as a child. By growing up with a language from his or her infant years, an individual becomes a “native speaker” of that language.

It is pretty much impossible to take away a person’s mother tongue, even if you remove him or her from the language environment at a young age. Much like riding a bicycle, once you learn it, you never really forget it. Some people are lucky enough to have two mother tongues. This can occur in places where two languages are spoken, or perhaps when a child has parents that come from two different countries. People who possess two mother tongues are called “bilingual.”

It is of course possible to pick up a language that is not your mother tongue. However, this is no simple task, and the older you get, the harder it becomes. Very few people are able to master a language that is not their mother tongue. Language learners have to spend vast amounts of time memorizing vocabulary and studying grammar rules that most native speakers never had to. Generally speaking, native speakers learn these things simply by hearing them in context on a daily basis.

Don’t let this piece of information turn you off to learning a language. Even though you can’t make English your mother tongue, nothing is stopping you from getting a good understanding of how to use the language. Then you can take advantage of all the ways that speaking English can help you in life.

54. Which of the following people is bilingual?

(A) Jason speaks Mandarin and is studying in English at school.

(B) Marc lives in a country where people speak English and French, so he knows both. (C) Cynthia’s native language is Japanese, and she also wants to learn Korean or Russian. (D) Melissa learned Spanish as an infant, but picked up German after she moved to

Germany.

55. According to the article, what is something that a person doesn’t have to do much to learn his or her mother tongue?

(A) Be born in a place that speaks that language. (B) Hear the language in context.

(C) Study lots of words and grammar. (D) Learn that language from a very young age.

(2) Gone are the days when passengers felt such loyalty to certain airlines that they would book a seat without giving a single thought to cheaper alternatives. In recent years, “low-cost” or “budget” airlines have become the fastest-growing segment of the airline market. A budget airline is one that generally has lower fares and fewer comforts. Partly as more people are traveling by plane and partly due to steadily rising energy prices, budget airlines have been using every trick up their sleeves to stay competitive. To offer their customers affordable tickets, budget airlines differ from their counterparts in several ways. First of all, they tend to have a simpler way of calculating their rates. For example, many low-cost carriers provide one-way tickets which only cost half the price of a round-trip ticket, while most major carriers offer only small fare reductions on one-way flights. Besides, almost all budget airlines have adopted a system of dynamic ticket pricing, which means ticket prices keep changing based on demand. Usually the earlier you book a ticket, the cheaper its price will be. This policy encourages people to book their ticket in advance so as to ensure that flights are filled up early. In addition to their ticketing policies, budget airlines usually offer “no frills” service. To make up for revenue lost in lower ticket prices, the airlines may charge for extras like food, priority boarding, seat allocation, and the checking in of extra baggage. Some standard things on normal

flights like meals, entertainment, or even blankets and pillows may be provided only for an additional fee.

While budget airlines appeal to the many passengers who enjoy cheaper flights, they have their own critics. Industry experts in some countries have long accused some airlines of cutting corners regarding the maintenance and safety of their airplanes. For instance, one Irish carrier has been warned more than once that they are not carrying enough fuel on their flights. Other airlines have been found to save labor costs by employing inexperienced pilots. No matter what the case may be, you get what you pay for.

(C) Budget airlines provide in-flight meals, entertainment, and allowance for extra baggage all for a fee.

(D) There has been a steady decrease in the number of budget airlines in recent years. 58. What can be inferred from the reading?

(A) Some of the ways that the low-cost carriers have adopted to save money might turn out to be unsafe.

(B) Customers who travel on tight budgets won’t look for cheaper flights to meet their needs.

(C) The further ahead people book their budget airlines tickets, the less of a bargain they’ll get.

(D) People should only fly on budget airlines because they are more affordable and safer. (3) O. Henry, the pseudonym of William Sidney Porter, is a well-known American short-story writer whose stories are noted for their witty plots, clever wording, and unexpected endings. Like many other writers, O. Henry had wandered through different professions before he finally found his calling as a short-story writer. He worked as a clerk at his uncle’s drugstore and became a licensed pharmacist at the age of 19. At the drugstore he showed his natural artistic talents by sketching the townspeople that frequented the store. A few years later he moved to Austin, Texas, where he had an active social life, and he took several different jobs over the next few years, from working as a pharmacist to banking. But O. Henry was obviously not a good bank teller. He was careless with his bookkeeping and was accused of embezzlement by the bank. He lost his job, but he wasn’t indicted. After that, O. Henry and his family moved to Houston, where he started writing for The Houston Post. O. Henry usually collected ideas for

his column by lingering in hotel lobbies, observing and talking to whoever happened to be there. This was a very useful technique, and one that he used to gain inspiration throughout his writing career.

O. Henry’s most prolific writing period began in 1902, when he moved to New York. Here he wrote 381 short stories, one story each week for over a year. Most of his short stories are set in the early twentieth century. Many take place in New York and often deal with ordinary people like clerks, officers, waitresses, and so forth. His most famous short story, “The Gift of the Magi,” clearly characterizes his style. It is a story about a poor young husband and wife, each of whom sells his or her most precious possession to buy a Christmas gift for the other, only to find that the gifts are no longer needed as they already have their love for one another. In the story, the writer resolves an awkward situation in a warm and creative way, leaving readers with a surprising but endearing ending.

59. What is the main purpose of the passage?

(A) To tell us why William Sidney Porter used the pen name “O. Henry.” (B) To give us a brief introduction to O. Henry’s life and writing style. (C) To tell us the reasons why O. Henry chose to be a writer.

(D) To introduce some of O. Henry’s famous short stories.

60. Which of the following statements about the story “The Gift of the Magi” is NOT true? (A) The ending of the story surprises its readers.

(B) Each member of the couple sacrifices his or her best possession for the other. (C) This story can best represent O. Henry’s writing style.

(D) The couple knew beforehand that their gifts would not be needed anymore.
