HK Universitv of Science and Technolow Presents First Forum on Information Technolonv Manaclement
: . . _ -
As organisations and companies come to rely increasingly heavily on information technology, the possibility that computer system breakdown could lead to disaster ‘grows ever stronger. Are companies then at the mercy of the computer? If so, how can computers best be controlled and exploited? These are just two of the questions that will be addressed on 4 October 1993 during the First Forum on Information Technology, presented by the Department of Business Information Systems (BIS) of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), at the Council Chamber, 7/F, Academic Building.
Dr Kar Yan Tam, organiser of the forum said, “The BIS Department wants to set up communication channels with the industrial and commercial sector in order to understand their needs, and to promote co-operation between HKUST and the business community.”
“To cater to the needs of the industrial and commercial sector, the BIS Department has started several research projects. We are developing an imaging system to help retrieve documents efficiently, decision support systems which use information technology systems to help decision makers, business re-engineering systems to : .- improve the efficiency and effectiveness of a business organisation’s operation
process, and a quality management system,” he continued.
The HKUST BIS Department has all the facilities necessary to carry out sophisticated research of this nature. By the end of the year its Multi-Media Laboratory and its Networking Laboratory will be in use. So will the School of Business and Management’s Personal Computer Laboratory. Already in use is its Work Station Laboratory. “These are Hong Kong’s state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities,” said Dr Tam..
