HKUST Receives HK$150 Million Donation from Mr Martin Ka Shing Lee
for a New Innovation Building

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) expressed heartfelt gratitude to a HK$150 million donation made by Mr Martin Ka Shing Lee, in support of a new Innovation Building that will take the University’s innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives to the next level.
In recognition of the donor’s generosity, the building will be named “Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Building” after Mr Martin Ka Shing Lee, Vice-Chairman of Henderson Land Development Company Limited, and the son of The Honorable Lee Shau Kee, GBM, Chairman of Henderson Land.
Mr Martin Ka Shing Lee said, “It is my honor to render my support towards the development of this new Innovation Building, which is needed for driving technological advancements in Hong Kong. In our everyday life, we are enjoying the benefts of technology innovations. Not only do revolutions and new inventions in technology boost economic and social development, they also bring people closer. Furthermore, in order to enhance the diversifcation of Hong Kong economy, and to build better employment opportunities and pathways for young people, it is a must to promote innovation and creativity. Upon completion, I believe the new Innovation Building will become a platform that offers opportunities to nurture more outstanding innovative and entrepreneurial talents, further enhancing the competitiveness of Hong Kong.”
HKUST Council Chairman The Honorable Andrew Liao Cheung-sing expressed profound gratitude to the Lee’s for their donation and continuous support of the University. “We are very fortunate to have such great partners. Mr Lee’s unwavering support of HKUST not only signifes his vision for education and research, innovation and creativity, but also his strong endorsement and recognition of HKUST’s mission of excellence.”
HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan said the donation will help the University to sharpen its efforts in innovation and entrepreneurship. “As a major project that marks HKUST’s 25 anniversary, the building will further enhance innovation in education as well as collaboration between the university and the industry, we hope it will be a place that generates lots of ideas, inventions and discoveries, so it not just benefts our students and faculty but also the larger society.”
The building is set to have seven stories with a construction foor area of about 8,000 to 10,000 square meters. It provides incubation facilities for start-ups, space for various entrepreneurship-related programs and activities, it houses several cross-disciplinary research institutes and centers,as well as serving as a platform for collaboration with the industry.
