Today there are policemen everywhere, but in 1700, London had no policemen at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night and they were not paid.
About 300 years ago, London was starting to get bigger and more and more people began to live there. The city was very dirty and many people were poor. There were so many thieves who stole money in the streets that people stayed in their homes as much as possible.
In 1750, Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called “Bow Street Runners” because they worked near Bow Street. Fifty years later, there were 120 “Bow Street Runners”, but London had become very big and needed more policemen. So in 1829, the first Metropolitan (or London) Police Force was started with 3,000 officers. Most of the men worked on foot, but a few rode horses. Until 1920 all the police in London were men.
Today, London police are quite well paid and for the few police officers who still ride horses, the pay is even better than for the others.

Will it matter if you don’t take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.
Opposite to what many people believe, if you don’t eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals. 65. During the test, those who were tested were given______________.
A. no breakfast at all B. very rich breakfast
C. little food for breakfast D. different breakfasts or none 66. The result of the test show that ________________.
A. breakfast has great effect on work and studies B. breakfast has little to do with a person’s work
C. a person will work better if he has a simple breakfast
D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast
67. The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don’t eat breakfast, you will ___________.
A. lose weight B. not lose weight C. be healthier D. gain a lot of weight 68. According to the passage, if a student does not eat breakfast, ________________. A. he will fall ill B. he will fail to listen to his teacher
C. he will not make progress in his study D. his mind will work more slowly

A man named Joe and his wife moved to a new farm with their three sons. They were setting into the new community when a nearby farmer told Joe that there was gold in the dirt of his new land. Joe took that statement as that there was actual gold in the land. He thought to himself, “I have three strong sons, I’ll tell them about it”.
Needless to say, his sons actually began digging in one corner with a certain width and kept going until they got to the end. Once they finished they would start another piece and go back the other direction. They began to realize that digging for gold was fun!
Seeing that, Joe thought he would plant some crops where the dirt had been turned thoroughly. He planted corn, tomatoes, and potatoes. His sons continued to dig through the soil, determined to find gold.
As each different crop became ready to be harvested, Joe started to realize that there was more than he and his family could ever eat. One of Joe’s neighbors suggested that he set up a vegetable stand (摊). Joe and his wife did that very thing. This process went on for years and Joe and his wife became quite rich from it. They were even able to send their sons off to college.
Remember at the beginning of the story Joe was told by his new neighbor that there was gold in the land? Well, the truth is, Joe’s understanding of the English language was less than perfect. His new neighbor friend actually told him that his land had rich soil.
Go out and pretend that there is gold in all your challenges so that you can be inspired to motivate (激励) yourself to allow the fate (命运) to provide all that you need. The fate will never give up on you, if you never give up on yourself.
69. What made Joe believe that there was actual gold in his land?
A. His desire to send his sons to college. B. His dream to become wealthy. C. His poor understanding of English. D. His trust in his neighbor. 70. Joe’s three sons took digging for gold as __________.
A. a pleasure B. a challenge C. a lie D. a dream 71. How did Joe deal with his too many crops?
A. By leaving them in the land. B. By selling them to others. C. By giving them away to neighbors. D. By challenging them for gold. 72. The best title for this passage would be____________.
A. Telling a white lie B. Achieving wealth from land C. Accepting challenges in life D. Digging for gold

system(社会福利制度). Education is one part of that. In Sweden, parents don’t end up paying large amounts of money for their children’s education. From kindergarten to university it’s completely free. About one-third of all young Swedes go on to higher education.
“Sweden makes me think there is such a thing as a free lunch,” said Lilyan Yu, who graduated from Blenkinge Technology of Institute two years ago. Yu was treated like a Swedish student and didn’t pay tuition. She only had to pay for housing and food --- around 2,000 yuan for an apartment on campus(大学校园) and 1,000 yuan per month for food.
The free education has attracted many Asian students, and an influx in recent years has put great pressure on the education system. The Swedish government has been told by college teachers that they need to make non-European students pay tuition.
Some say that it’s not fair to provide a free education for students from countries that don’t reciprocate (互 惠 ). Swedish students have to pay tuition in China, but Chinese don’t pay in Sweden.
Denmark was the first of three Scandinavian (斯 堪 的 纳 维 亚 的 ) countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway) to start charging tuition for non-European Union students last September. 73. When Lilyan Yu studied in Sweden, she paid ________.

D. non-European students should be made to pay for tuition 76. The best title for this passage would be ________________.
A. A Chinese student in Sweden B. Education, almost a free lunch in Sweden C. The good social welfare system in Sweden D. Sweden, a great country in Europe

Many wild animals are facing the danger of dying out, because the environment that they are living in has changed greatly. For example, with the development of cities, the use of insecticide and serious pollution, their living areas have become narrower and narrower. Many of the wild animals, now are faced with food crisis. At the same time, man is killing off species just for
getting their fur, skin, horns, teeth and meat.
In order to protect our resources of nature, people should realize that the loss of any species is at least the loss of source of knowledge and a source of natural beauty. There fore, measures of the following should be taken: pollution standards are made to keep down poisons; killing off certain rare species is stopped; national parks should be set up as wild life, reserves.
