25/07/2010 Prof Nancy Ip of HKUST Elected Councilor of World's Leading Organizations for Neuroscience and Psychopharmacology

Prof Nancy Ip, Chair Professor of the Division of Life Science and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been concurrently elected Councilor for two of the world's leading international organizations for neuroscience and psychopharmacology. She was elected Councilor of the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP), the world's leading professional organization for psychopharmacology, and of the Society of Neuroscience (SfN), the world's largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to advancing understanding of the brain and nervous system. Prof Ip is the first international member being elected SfN Councilor in the history of this US-based Society.

Established in 1957 in Zurich, Switzerland, CINP is dedicated to promoting international scientific study, teaching and application of psychopharmacology. It facilitates the training of psychiatrists and maintains partnership with the

pharmaceutical industry worldwide. Its Council comprises global leaders in psychopharmacology such as psychiatrists, pharmacologists and other basic scientists. The Councilors are elected by CINP members to give advice on the organization's overall program.

Since its inception in 1969, the SfN has grown from 500 members to over 40,000 and is currently the world's largest organization of scientists and physicians. The Society aims not only to expand our understanding of the nervous system, but also to translate this knowledge into more effective treatments and preventive measures for brain disorders. The Annual Meeting of the Society consistently attracts over 30,000 participants worldwide. SfN Councilors are elected by members and play an instrumental role in steering the Society's future direction and programs. Prof Ip is internationally recognized for her discoveries in neurotrophic factors and their potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. She has published 200 scientific papers, with more than 13,000 SCI citations and holds 20 patents in her areas of research interest.

Prof Ip received her PhD degree in Pharmacology from Harvard University. She joined HKUST in 1993 and has served as Associate Dean of Science, Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute and Head of Biochemistry. She is also an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, and has received numerous prestigious awards including the National Natural Science Award, the L'OREAL-UNESCO for Women in Science Award and the Scientific and Technological Progress Prize of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.
