Laboratory For Future Homes
Built At HKUST
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will open a Consumer Media Laboratory to work with local industry on
developing the next generation of consumer electronic products. Dr Jack Lau, Laboratory Director and Assistant Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, says the Laboratory will focus on the latest technologies and product design concepts. Current projects include dimmers for compact fluorescent lights, a wireless LAN system integrating the antenna into the printed circuit board of the equipment, and wireless radio audio systems.
The Consumer Media Laboratory is also launching an
Engineer-in-Residence program to facilitate effective technology transfer. Company sponsors can send engineers to the University to work on selected projects, allowing both the University and local industry to share experience and expertise.
Dr Lau says, "We expect the Laboratory, supported by Industry Department funding of $14.7 million, to enhance the competitiveness of local industry."
