FORUM ON ELECTRONIC COMMERCE TO BE HELD AT HKUST
How can electronic commerce be best utilized for business opportunities?
What should corporate managers do to face the challenge of an emerging global electronic market?
Corporate executives, division managers and business professionals will have a chance to explore answers to these and other questions on 5 July 1995 when HKUST’s Information & Systems Management Department holds a one-day forum on Electronic Commerce and the Information Superhighway.
With the rapid growth of the Internet and the Information Superhighway, electronic commerce has become a significant new platform for global business.
“Electronic commerce has experienced exponential growth in the U.S. in recent years. But in Hong Kong, it is still at a very early stage,” says Dr Kar Yan Tam, an associate professor of the Department of Information & Systems Management.
“In the U .S . , product catalogues have already been put on-line and customers can purchase or just search the name of a product on the Internet. The Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), a shared system to replace traditional purchase orders with electronic messages, has been commonly used to save processing costs.”
“We hope to introduce the business opportunities that exist on the Internet and the Information Superhighway to Hong Kong business professionals while at the same time alerting them to both the potentials and the underlying problems of their applications.”
Information management experts who will lead the forum include Professor Andrew B. Whinston and Dr Ravi Kalakota from the University of Texas and Drs Tung Xuan Bui and Theodore H.K. Clark from HKUST. They will explore important issues such as new electronic payment methods, Electronic Data Interchange systems and electronic marketing.
