Cover Story

A Year of Victory for IELM Students

It’s now two-thirds into Year 2009, and our students have already claimed championship and runner-up titles in three major competitions. The honors they have earned are indeed well-deserved and everyone at IELM is extremely proud of them. On March 21, 2009, a team of five IELM students competed with eight teams from other tertiary institutions in Hong Kong in the CILTHK Student Day 2009. The event was jointly organized by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong and IELM. The nine teams formulated solutions for recent logistics and transport issues and defended their proposals against criticisms from fellow competitors. Our team impressed the panel of judges with their insightful discussion on ‘Cooperation rather than Competition among Ports in the Pearl River Delta Region’, and was awarded the championship in the competition.

Meanwhile, two teams from the IELM Department won the championship and first runner-up titles in the 2009 HKSQ Company-Based Student Project Competition on April 18, 2009. Nine other teams from local universities also competed but their performance was eclipsed by the inspiring, in-depth discussions of our winning teams. In their project titled “Strategies for Implementing the New ISO 9001: Quality Management System Requirements”, the champion team painstaking compared ISO 9001:2000 with the new version ISO 9001:2008, highlight the advantages of the new version while suggesting ways to cope with the challenges it poses.

Then on June 18, 2009, an IELM student presented his business plan at the YCD Entrepreneurs Challenge (E-Challenge) 2009 Business Plan Competition. His innovation GPS Robotic Water Analyzer impressed the judges with its cost effectiveness and earned him the championship title. Some 900 students from various tertiary institutions in Hong Kong took part in this competition organized by the Young Entrepreneurs Development Council.

We congratulate our winners, once again, on their outstanding achievements and excellent teamwork, and are confident that our students will go on to earn even more honors in the coming year and the many years ahead.

Message from the Department Head

How time flies! Our department has been established for 15 years, and to celebrate our first 15th anniversary, we launched a series of activities to share our success with the public. IELM Students named Champions and

1st Runners-up of 2009 HKSQ

Company-Based Student Project

Competition

On April 18, 2009, two teams from the IELM Department beat nine other teams from local universities to become the champion and first runner-up teams in the 2009 HKSQ Company-Based Student Project Competition, organized by the Hong Kong Society for Quality. This is the fourth time, since 2006, that our students have won the competition.

During the competition, our student teams, along with their competitors, studied real-world problems and presented their findings and proposed solutions for improvement on the status quo. The champion team looked into “Strategies for Implementing the New ISO 9001: Quality Management System Requirements”. Since the current quality standard ISO 9001:2000 will expire by the end of 2009 and be replaced by the updated version ISO 9001:2008, certifications of the original ISO 9001 will expire by November 2011. Companies and organizations thus have to study the new standard thoroughly, digest the details and update requirements, as well as revise existing quality control practices in order to comply with the new quality standard and renew their certificates.

The winning project was sponsored by Surface Mount Technology (Holdings) Limited. The students meticulously compared the old and new versions of ISO 9001 to identify critical changes in the new version, and they also discussed positive and negative impacts of the new ISO9001 on the company. The findings of their project shed light on ways to make use of the advantages of the new ISO9001 and cope with the challenges it poses.

YDC Entrepreneurs’ Challenge

(E-Challenge) 2009 Business Plan

Competition

A team from IELM, ECE and ECON of HKUST outperform 240 teams consisting 900 students from other tertiary institutions in Hong Kong to become the champion team of the YDC Entrepreneurs’ Challenge (E-Challenge) 2009 Business Plan Competition on June 18, 2009. The competition was organized by the Young Entrepreneurs Development Council (YDC).

Our Year 3 student, Zhou Daijun, formed a team with other HKUST students called Tech4Enviro. At the competition, the team unveiled their innovation, GPS Robotic Water Analyzer, which is an unmanned robotic miniature boat platform with chemical sensors. The analyzer is capable of monitoring and analyzing water quality at a fraction of current prices.

“YDC is an excellent channel for engineering students to incubate their business sense and know the gap between technology and real-life practices. The most important factor for our victory was the excellent engineering training provided by UST, added to that our own vision. We have thoroughly enjoyed overcoming difficulties and frustration, and also the brainstorming, discussion and presentation,” said Zhou Daijun.

Valuable Internship at Procter &

Gamble

During my two-month summer internship at Procter & Gamble (P&G), I was assigned to a project related to the effectiveness of its supply chain. To familiarize me with P&G’ s supply chain and the business context, the company provided many orientation activities and training workshops. Through these sessions, I gained a preliminary understanding of their operations, for example, how its manufacturing plants operated and how the demand planning team worked. I also spent a fortnight in two supermarkets to learn first-hand about P&G’ s retailers. This opportunity for job shadowing was really unexpected. I never imagined I would have such a chance.

I really enjoyed and continue to treasure the time I worked at P&G. It was not just a job. First, it was a transition from studying to work. For example, I learnt how important it is to understand the expectations of a company. I was introduced to a host of useful tools, such as Why-Why Analysis, which provide a good approach to problem-solving. I also realized why engineers, with their analytical minds, are so essential in many industries. Most importantly, after this internship, I could see how many opportunities and career prospects there are for industrial engineering students. As an industrial engineering major, we definitely have a competitive advantage in a wide range of industries. I feel very fortunate to have chosen this as my main field of study!

Mentorship Dinner 2011

30 November 2011

The lively Opening Ceremony for the Mentorship Program brought 22 executives from various industries together to interact with 82 enthusiastic student mentees. Each mentee w a s c a r e f u l l y m a t c h e d a n d p l a c e d a t a t a b l e w i t h a n executive working in the field that the student was most i n t e r e s t e d i n p u r s u i n g a s a c a r e e r. B u s i n e s s a r e a s represented included engineering, factory management, q u a l i t y c o n t r o l , l o g i s t i c s , t r a n s p o r t a t i o n , p r o j e c t management, consultancy, and banking.

It is a great joy to see our alumni become mentors and help to nourish our students across the generations. To be a mentor, it is important to be willing to invest the time to help mentees, not only by sharing work experiences but also by letting them know the appropriate attitude to work. This helps to maximize the benefit for mentees and increases their chances of success in

their careers.

Learning Through Work

As an alumnus, I would like to share my experience as an intern during my final year. In 2009, I was lucky to be selected to work at CVI in the summer. This was later extended to a one-year internship.

I found three major benefits from taking up such a challenge. First, from working in a company, you can get to know the basic terminology and what is expected in a business setting. You can also learn about the flow of business operations, which helps you to understand how and what to do.

Second, you learn about this particular industry. As part of an intern program, the company will arrange for you to get to know more about the field and related industries. Third, you will have gained working experience, which will be useful when looking for other jobs and taking up a post in another company.

Such an experience should help you to build up a good attitude toward work and to adapt to the working environment. When starting out in a job, you will sometimes find yourself unsure of what to do or how to do something, and you are bound to make some mistakes. But over time, you will learn how to avoid problems. This will definitely help you to grow.

By working during the summer and/or during a semester, you can certainly gain a great deal of understanding and knowledge. It is an opportunity not to be missed.
