HKUST Business School Introduces a New Master of Science

in Global Operations

The School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) will introduce a new Master of Science in Global Operations (MSGO) to meet the demand for business leaders and managers in the increasingly globalized operating environment. The new MSGO program provides a one-year postgraduate education opportunity for fresh and recent graduates who are interested to pursue careers in global business operations. Led by a team of world-class faculty members in operations management, the one-year, pre-experience master’s program blends advanced knowledge of effective operations management with practical understanding in a global context.

Professor Shu Ming Ng, the MSGO Academic Director, said, “Managing global operations has emerged to the forefront of many companies’ strategic concerns, especially multinational companies. While many of the world’s top 500 companies have established their operations in China, many Chinese companies are ‘going global’. These companies face the challenges of developing effective management of operations on a global basis.”

“The MSGO synergizes the academic strength of the HKUST Business School and its industry connections, as well as the strategic location of Hong Kong, to equip students with cutting-edge knowledge and technologies in global operations. This program will prepare them in the qualitative aspects of working in a multi-cultural setting,” added Professor Ng.

During their study in the program, students will benefit from a range of experiences to develop industry networking, new perspectives, analytical and management skills, and practical experiences. The business exposure includes the latest business cases, company visits, and real business projects in services or manufacturing industries.

The program also features a series of general business core courses in accounting, economics, finance, marketing, and management, which are key to strategic decision-making in every aspect of business. Thus, students with non-business backgrounds are also welcome to join the program. To graduate, students are required to complete a total of 30 credits of coursework which include general core, required and elective courses. Mr Chris Tsang, Executive Director of MBA/MSc Programs at the HKUST Business School, said, “Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to master the concepts and skills to work in services or manufacturing organizations that compete in global markets in both private and public sectors. Students may also be able to work for an internship to apply what they have learned in class and gain practical experiences prior to their careers.”

Classes for the first cohort will commence in the Fall semester of 2013. The program is now open for application. Applicants are required to possess a bachelor's degree from a recognized university or institution with satisfactory academic results; satisfactory IELTS or TOEFL results if their native language is not English, or degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English; and preferably satisfactory GMAT or GRE results. A scholarship scheme will be set up for students with excellent academic records.
