RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT
Maintaining research leadership requires us to recruit new faculty
proactively, acquire state-of-the-art research equipment, and increase
funding support for research — especially in some of the research priorities:
nano-science and nano-technology; life science and biotechnology;
electronics, wireless and information technology; environment and
sustainable development; energy; and management education and research.
We will collaborate with the government in developing science and technology in Hong Kong, while our international
and Mainland China partnerships will extend our research base and reach.
5-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN
A visionary course of action is set to advance HKUST to fresh heights of
achievement between 2011 and 2016.
EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
As Hong Kong restructures its undergraduate education from three to four
years, we have seized this opportunity to totally redesign our curriculum
starting in 2012. We offer interdisciplinary courses, international academic
exchanges, internship opportunities, and a co-op program — all to ensure
a holistic development of our students.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT
Fully 100% of our faculty are doctorate holders, mostly from leading institutions
around the globe. We are recruiting close to 100 new and replacement faculty
between 2011 and 2016, looking to keep a diverse international mix of motivated
high achievers.
INTERNATIONAL AND MAINLAND STRATEGY
Straddling East and West, HKUST is well-connected with Mainland China — both its
universities and enterprises, but is academically aligned with the West. Our Fok Ying
Tung Graduate School in Nansha, our IER center in Shenzhen, and our Zhejiang
Institute for Advanced Materials of HKUST are splendid platforms for building
partnerships with enterprises inside China.
We are developing strategic partnerships in major locations with top global
universities while aggressively attracting the best international students as well as
academics.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Students and faculty are encouraged to reach out to society via our community
service programs including the dynamic HKUST Connect and the REDbird Award
Program. We are also expanding the reach to our global alumni communities for
mentoring and providing support to our students.
