HKUST Celebrates 14th Congregation
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its 14th Congregation from 8-10 November, conferring 1,807 Bachelor's, 1,374 Master's, and 133 Doctoral degrees.
HKUST Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Court, Dr the Honorable Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, officiated at the final day Ceremony (10 November).
At the Congregation, the University conferred honorary doctorates on three distinguished awardees for their contributions to society and academia. They are:
Dr the Hon Tung Chee Hwa , Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's
Political Consultative Conference: Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa
Prof Hau L Lee , Thoma Professor of Operations, Information, and
Technology at the Stanford Graduate School of Business: Doctor of Engineering honoris causa
Prof Alan G MacDiarmid , Nobel Laureate in Chemistry: Doctor of
Science honoris causa
The Congregation also saw other University awards presented for outstanding achievements.
Dr Irene Man-Chi Lo, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, received HKUST's
highest accolade in teaching, the Michael G Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching. Dr Lo is cited for her professionalism and passion as a teacher, and her care for students' career and well-being.
This year's Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body was awarded to Lo Sin Au Astrid, Vice-President of the 13th session of Students' Union. She assumed the vacated post arising from the resignation of the Union's President. Serving in dual capacities, she took the lead to review the Students' Union internal guidelines, which in turn strengthen the Union's ties with its affiliated societies.
The inaugural "My Most Influential Teacher Award" is presented separately to Mr Law Chung Kuen, former Vice-Principal of Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College, and Mr She Ki Poon, former Principal of Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College. The selection for the award is based on votes by students in the graduating class who are invited to nominate a full-time secondary school teacher with strong positive impact on their lives and studies.
The 14th Congregation has expanded the ranks of HKUST alumni to over 28,000 since the University's establishment in 1991.
