Last summer, 76,000 fires burned in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. This is an increase of 80% from 2018. It’s the Amazon’s dry season, but the main cause of the fires is “deforestation.” This means people cut down trees and set fires to clear them away. They can then use this land to grow crops or raise farm animals. Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s president since January 2019, wants to improve Brazil’s economy through agriculture. Because of this, there are now fewer laws

protecting the rainforest.

These fires may lead to climate change and are terrible for the environment. The Amazon’s trees and plants produce a significant amount of Earth’s oxygen. The smoke and fire hurts many local animals and people. These fires will seriously damage our planet for years to come.

When people have an easy time on the road, they try not to honk their car horns much. In places like India, though, traffic chaos tests everyone’s patience, and the sound of horns is a permanent part of city life. In particular, honking at red lights is common in India’s largest city, Mumbai. It might appear that drivers are foolishly trying to pressure the light to change. In fact, they are honking to prepare other drivers for the green light. Regardless, the constant noise only bothers the public while doing nothing to speed up traffic.

The police in Mumbai tested a possible solution for two months last year. They installed microphone systems at a few traffic lights. When too many horns were detected, the lights stayed red longer. A green light only appeared when most drivers kept their hands off their horns.

Although many in Mumbai approve of the system, critics say that it ignores the stressful conditions that cause the honking. They want the government to try to reduce the number of cars on Mumbai’s extremely congested roads instead.

55.According to the article, drivers in Mumbai honk at red light because _________. (A) They want to remind others to follow traffic rules.

(B) They want to get ready for the green light. (C) They just feel like doing it.

56. According to the article, what will happen if too many horns are detected by the microphone system?

(A) Drivers will get a ticket for causing noise pollution.

(B) Drivers can expect a quicker change of the green lights. (C) Drivers have to spend more time waiting for the green lights. (D) The system will crash and drivers will have to pay to get it fixed. 57.Which might be the best solution to the heavy traffic in Mumbai? (A) To promote traffic education.

(B) To reduce the number of cars. (C) To take off the horns of cars.

(D) To speed up the traffic by shortening the waiting time.

The Taj Mahal, in Agra, India, is one of the most brilliant structures on Earth. It is nearly 400 years old. Emperor Shah Jahan had it built to remember his wife. It took about 20 years to build the monument. Some 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants helped get the job done. Today, the Taj Mahal is not just a symbol of cultural history. It’s also India’s most famous tourist attraction. About 8 million people visit it each year.

But pollution is turning the white marble building shades of green, yellow, and brown. The Taj Mahal stands on the polluted Yamuna River. Insects are attracted to the dirty water. They leave greenish droppings on the building. Immediate actions must be taken to stop the situation from getting bad to worse. Air pollution is also a big threat. Factories and cars release pollution into the air. It sticks to the Taj Maha’s surface. In the 1990s, Indis’s Supreme Court ordered hundreds of factories near the the Taj Mahal to close. Also, car and bus traffic was not allowed to get near. After that, workers clean the Taj Mahal little by lttle.

But doing so is difficult, expensive, and time-consuming; And it doesn’t stop the colors from changing.

On July 11, India’s Supreme Court (最高法院) gave the city of Agra a warning:“Either you destroy the Taj Mahal or you help restore it”. The local government suggested to stop using plastics from the area. It also calls for the closing of more factories.

Often called “rainforests of the sea,” coral reefs provide a home for 25% of all species in the ocean. They are stony structures full of dark hideaways where fish and sea animals can lay their eggs and get away from predators. Without these underwater “apartment houses,” there would be fewer fish in the ocean. Some species might even become endangered or

(5)

disappear completely.

There are thousands of reefs in the world; sadly, however, they are now in serious danger. More than one-third are in such bad shape that they could die within ten years. Many might not even last that long! Scientists are working hard to find out what leads to this destruction. There are still a lot of questions unanswered, but three main causes have been identified.

The first cause is pollution on land. The pollutants ( 汙 染 物 ) run with rainwater into rivers and streams, which carry the poisons into the ocean. Chemicals from the poisons kill reefs or make them weak, so they have less resistance to diseases.

Global warming is another reason. Higher ocean temperatures kill the important food source for the coral—the algae, the tiny greenish-gold water plants that live on coral. When the algae die, the coral loses its color and it also dies eventually. This process, known as “coral bleaching,” has happened more and more frequently in recent years.

The last factor contributing to the disappearance of coral reefs is people. People sometimes crash into reefs with their boats or drop anchors on them, breaking off large chunks of coral. Divers who walk on reefs can also do serious damage. Moreover, some people even break coral off to collect for souvenirs since it is so colorful and pretty.

How can we help the reefs? We need to learn more about them and work together to stop the activities that may threaten their existence.

64. According to the article, how do pollutants on land get into the ocean? (A) People dump them into the ocean.

(B) They come with rivers flowing into the ocean.

(C) They come with the garbage patch around the world oceans. (D) They are produced by the ships and divers working in the ocean. 65.Which is Correct?

(A) Coral reefs are soft enough for sea animals to lay eggs inside. (B) Most of the coral reefs might be dead this year.

(C) If we stop buying coral reefs as decorations, there might be fewer people destroying them. (D) Scientists have known all the factors that lead to the destruction of coral reefs.

66.Which is most likely the reason for coral bleaching? (A) Global warming.

(B) The destructions caused by anchors. (C) Fish laying too many eggs inside.

(D) The overgrowth of algae. 彰化縣私立精誠中學108 學年度第二學期國中一年級期末考英語科試題答案
