It has been said that great artists break the mold, but unique artists shatter it. Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is truly a unique artist. His works of art may not be as revered as Da Vinci’s or as valued as Picasso’s, but he has sparked a fire in the modern art world that will be hard to extinguish.

Many artists pride themselves on resisting popular culture. Murakami, however, has celebrated it. His works, in a variety of media, range from large-than-life statues of nude manga figures to watches, mouse pads, and even pricey Louis Vuitton handbags. The finished products seem to be intended to make a statement about contemporary society. Produced in a factory-like setting similar to the studio of the late Andy Warhol, Murakami’s works are part of a new movement in Japanese contemporary art.

Born in Tokyo in 1963, Murakami studied art and received advanced degrees from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. It was during his studies that Murakami became dissatisfied with the way Japanese art was viewed by the Western world. Murakami felt that the Japanese obsession with pop culture should be central to contemporary Japanese art, and wanted to express this in his creations.

His works are amusing, acceptable, and thoughtful. Murakami’s artworks have been on exhibition at museums from Paris to Boston and Los Angeles. The star-studded event, with the likes of Kanye West and Cindy Crawford in attendance, propelled Muramaki to new heights. Artist, entrepreneur, and new favorite of the art world, Takashi Muramaki has revived the Japanese art scene and pushed it into the international limelight.

Originally from tropical South America, the red fire ant gained entry to the United States through the Port of Mobile, Alabama in the late 1930s on cargo ships, but the first colony of the red ants was not found until 1942 by a 13-year-old boy in his backyard.

It immediately began to thrive in the new land and colonies spread quickly throughout the southeastern states. By 1975 the red imported fire ants had colonized over 52 million hectares of the United States. Now, it has infested more than 275 million hectares in the country.

Red imported fire ants build mounds in any type of soil. They also make mounds indoors. Each nest used to have but one queen, but now many mounds are often found with multiple queens. With multiple queens at work, its population increases rapidly. It’s common to find a nest with over 25,000 workers.

Red imported red fire ants can cause a number of problems. They construct their colonies on precious farmland, invading crops while searching for insects underground. They also like to make their mound in sunny areas, heavily infesting lawns and pastures. They can quickly strip fruit trees of their fruit. Small birds such as baby quails are fair game to the expanding colony. They appear to be attracted to electromagnetic fields and attack electrical insulation or wire connections. They can cause electrical shorts, fires, and other damage to electrical equipment. Worst of all, their stings can be fatal to livestock and humans.

57. When was the first nest of the red ant found in the United States? (A) In 1930s (B) In 1942 (C) In 1975 (D) After 1975

(D) To seek help from the government to control the red ant. 61-63

About 15 % of school-aged children have a learning disability. One of these is called dyslexia, that is, reading difficulties, which can result from poor vision, hearing problems, emotional problems and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

According to a new research, boys are more prone to having reading troubles than girls, and it’s not simply because they are more disruptive. Reading disabilities are genetic. Boys are more likely to have a range of development difficulties, and this is just one of them. The study clearly shows a higher percentage of reading-disabled males, and it is consistent with most earlier studies.

In fact, it’s better not to take any assumptions about children’s emerging literacy skills. For those with reading difficulties, what they need is proper treatment, the earlier the better. Reading is not an intuitive process; it doesn’t just happen. Every child is a unique learner, so it is most wise not to make assumptions about what a child will and won’t be able to do. Good instruction is necessary for boys along with girls, and it needs to be as early as possible. 61. From this article, we can infer that ______ are NOT likely to suffer from dyslexia.

(A) those with poor eyesight (B) those unable to concentrate

(C) those who are emotional (D) those who focus their attention on learning

62. Which one of the following is close to meaning of “Reading is not an intuitive process” in the third paragraph?

According to popular folklore, animals are smarter than they appear. Dogs bark before

earthquakes; cattle predict rainfall by sitting on the ground. But cattle may have another hidden talent in telling which way is north.

Small animals such as mole rats living underground are known for the use of magnetism to navigate. Dr. Begall and her colleagues wanted to know whether larger mammals also have the ability to perceive the magnetic fields. They investigated this possibility by studying images of thousands of cattle captured on Google Earth, a website that stitches together satellite photographs to produce an image of the Earth’s surface.

Grazing animals are known to orient themselves in a way that minimizes wind chill from the north and maximize the warmth of the sun when they are cold. The researchers therefore had to study a lot of cows grazing in lots of different places at different times of a day in order to average out these factors and whether cattle can act like compass needles.

The researchers concluded that cattle do generally orient themselves in a north-south

direction. This north-south preference has also been noted in flies, termites and honeybees. But 第 3 頁(共 4 頁)

unfortunately, even the high resolution of Google Earth is not powerful enough to tell which end of the cow is its head, and which its tail. The researchers were therefore unable to answer their research questions of whether cattle prefer to look north or south, and whether that differs in the northern and southern hemispheres.

64. What is the article mainly about?

(A) The usefulness of Google Earth. (B) Whether cattle are superior to other animals. (C) Animals’ sensitivity to natural disasters. (D) Whether cattle behave like compass needles. 65. Which of the following factors might affect Dr. Begall’s research result?

(A) Rainfall. (B) Earthquakes. (C) Location. (D) Cost. 66. What is the major finding of Dr. Begall’s study?

(A) Cattle point north-south. (B) Magnetism can’t be studied scientifically. (C) Animals prefer to look south. (D) Google Earth is a reliable research tool. 67. Why can’t the researchers get the answer to their research questions?

(A) Many cattle in their study are sitting on the ground. (B) The cattle constantly change directions to avoid wind chill. (C) There is magnetic difference between the two hemispheres. (D) They couldn’t tell a cow’s head from its tail in the satellite pictures.
