A strong Thao hero, Numa, decided to go into the lake to find out the cause. 28 Numa swam toward it to stop it from damaging more nets. 29 Finally, the spirit said, “I would rather die today than let your people

destroy all of us! With the large number of small-mesh nets you use, the lake is being emptied of its fish!” After realizing that the Thao people were wrong, Numa was embarrassed at the things that the Thao had done to the lake. 30 From that time on, the Thao no longer used small-mesh nets for fishing so that baby fish in the lake would not die out.

Singles’ Day is the world’s biggest shopping event. In less than a decade, AlibabaGroup HoldingLtd. turned an unconventional celebration for unmarried young adults in China into a

global event drawing in thousands of retailers and hundreds of millions of shoppers of all ages. It’s spread to other e-commerce operators and will include more stores than ever before this year. As Jack Ma began building the company, he came up with an idea of centering a shopping promotion around a holiday, drawing inspiration from the American Black Friday tradition of mega-discounts. He chose Nov. 11 starting in 2009. Early on, his company’s marketing encouraged consumers to treat themselves in celebration of being single. But the day has never been limited to the lonesome, and it targets every demographic.

While the mainland dominates sales, Alibaba is trying to make it more global. That means getting foreign brands involved in selling to the Chinese. It’s also working to promote its English-language websites. The 2018 edition will again involve AliExpress, which targets consumers abroad, and Lazada, its Southeast Asian operation.

More than twice as much products are sold over the 24-hour period than during the entire five-day U.S. holiday-buying spree that begins on Thanksgiving, runs through BlackFriday and

ends on CyberMonday. Every year has exceeded the one before, with last year’s sales climbing 39

percent to 168.2 billion yuan ($24.2 billion). Most of the buying was via Taobao and Tmall, Alibaba’s main shopping sites.

Almost everyone these days is aware of the negative effects that bullying can have on a child’s development. It can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety, and studies have shown that the impact can last for many years after the actual bullying took place. In recent years, the issue of bullying in schools has become very prominent and there have been concerted efforts to put an end to it. However, for some children, the source of their bullying comes not from their peers, but from their own siblings.

Brothers and sisters bullying one another should not be mistaken for sibling rivalry, which is perfectly normal, and which can be expected in most sibling relationships. Sibling bullying is much more pernicious, and includes the use of hurtful insults, physical violence and intimidation, and the intentional destruction of personal items which belong to the victim. It can even include spreading rumors or lies about a sibling, ignoring one, or deliberately excluding one from social contacts or activities that the other siblings may be involved in. The type bullying is especially harmful since the victims are usually unable to get away from their tormentors as they live together. Children who are bullied at school, on the other hand, can return to the safety and security of their home.

Until recently there has been relatively little attention paid to the issue of sibling bullying and almost no studies done on it. However, researchers at a number of British universities, including the University of Oxford, have published their findings from a decade-long study on the subject. Theirs results indicate that children who were often bullied by their brothers or sisters had a far higher likelihood of suffering from clinical depression in their early adulthood that those who

were not. As a result, it is important for parents and family members to be mindful of the impact that this type of behavior can have and to deal with it appropriately.
