On Halloween night in 1992, a young woman driving along a quiet country road in southeast Wisconsin felt a large thump on the right side of her car. Thinking she had hit something, she stopped and got out to see what had happened. It was then that she spied a giant, muscular beast racing toward her. She quickly got back into her car and drove away, but not before the terrifying beast attempted to jump on the trunk of her car.

Were it not for the news reports of this woman’s encounter, other people may not have shared their vivid accounts of encounters that also took place in the same area. As a result of her revelation, they come forward to relate similar stories about seeing a werewolf-like creature that was clearly out of the ordinary. It became known as “The Bray Road Beast,” the most famous American werewolf in modern history.

Between 1989 and 1992, several people in the Bray Road area claimed to see a huge, hairy beast with glowing yellow eyes, large fangs , and pointed ears that acted very weirdly. A dairy farmer related an incident of seeing a large, muscular creature in his pasture one night. The footprints he found in his pasture the next day were larger than any that could be made by a typical dog or wolf.

Animal specialists who studied these reports could find no living animals that matched the descriptions given by witnesses. Since 1992, no other sightings of the weird creature have been reported. Ludwig van Beethoven is often considered the greatest music composer of all time. Millions of people across the world know about his music and admire it. The most

prestigious orchestra in the world, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, regularly performs his music and is responsible for most of Beethoven’s recordings we hear today.

Beethoven was born in the Germany city, Bonn, in 1770. As a boy, he showed great musical aptitude as his father taught him to play the violin and the piano. During a visit to Bonn in 1787, the famous composer Mozart heard Beethoven playing the piano. He made the famous announcement: “This young man will one day give the world something wroth to listening to.” In 1792, Beethoven moved to Vienna, the city in which he lived for the rest of his life. Beethoven became renowned for his improvisational skill and was determined to earn his life as freelance musician. During his first few years in Vienna, Beethoven played the violin in an orchestra and played for the wealthy patrons in his free time. He was a confident and independent man and became just as well-known for his wit and personality as he did for his music. It was during these days that Beethoven composed his first symphony. Everything changed for Beethoven in 1798 when he found something terrible. He realized he was losing his hearing. The disability changed his whole life and had sudden affects on his personality. Beethoven could no longer perform as a musician or socialize in the manner he was accustomed to. He became a suspicious and bad-tempered man. Beethoven reacted by spending most of time alone and devoted his entire energy to composition. The period from the year 1800 to 1815 become known as the middle period of Beethoven’s career. During these years, he composed his second to eighth symphonies as well as numerous piano overtures. Beethoven worked with great care and patience. He would start with a theme and work on it, sometimes for years, until he was satisfied with the final composition. The famous opening of Beethoven’s fifth symphony highlights the precision of Beethoven’s placement of each note. Critics believe that Beethoven was indeed conscious of the fact that his music would be played for hundreds of years in the future. It was the belief that made Beethoven such a perfectionist.

Beethoven’s hearing continued degenerate throughout his prolific middle period. His behavior became even more intolerable. Beethoven never married and most historians suggest this was due to the social isolation that resulted from his deafness. The emotions of anger, sadness, frustration and happiness were expressed with great force in his compositions and this is part of the reason why Beethoven’s music is unmatched. Audiences at the time were often shocked by what Beethoven created because never before had music been

composed with such vigor. Beethoven’s music was also original because it was original because it was composed purely for the purpose of enjoyment. It was very different from previous music that had always been composed for religious or social occasions.

Despite suffering total deafness by 1819, relying on the musical theory and vibration he felt resonating through his instruments, Beethoven continued to compose. His compositions during the third part of his career were complex and difficult for musicians to perform. Yet among his final compositions were masterpieces such as his Ninth Symphony, a piece of work regarded as his best. Critics admired Beethoven’s breakthroughs even though they often failed to understand the depth of his work. In the last page of his life, Beethoven‘s fame had spread throughout Europe. In 1826, Beethoven caught a serious cold and died of pneumonia the following year.

Have you ever wanted an educational experience that pushes you to your limits and helps you discover who you really are? Do you love the outdoors and the peace of the wilderness? Outward Bound (OB) may be just what you are looking for. OB, an international

organization educating young people, is committed to outdoor experiential learning. OB courses range from two to forty-two days, and the wilderness is their classroom. Students take a journey in which they leave all the trappings of human civilization behind and depend instead on their intelligence, courage, and friendships with others for their survival. Each OB class, led by an experienced teacher, focuses on outdoor skills such as snow camping, mountain climbing, or sailing. Even students with no wilderness experience will learn everything they need to complete a challenging journey. Students are often pushed to do things they never thought they could physically do, yet OB has an excellent safety record.

In addition to technical outdoor skills, OB students experience deeply personal lessons about themselves and their relationships with others. Students are dependent on each other for their safety so relationships that spring up are closer than most friendships. Teachers encourage students to reflect on their experience daily and share their fears, successes, and insights with each other. To complete a course, students are usually required to leave the group and be completely alone in the wilderness for a few days. It’s OB’s version of a final exam. Students use the technical skills they learned to keep themselves safe. After a day or two of being by themselves, students find their personal reflections deepening and they establish an entirely new, more meaningful relationship with themselves.

OB has over fifty schools throughout the world and hundreds of educational journeys to choose from. Though no two students have exactly the same experience, the vast majority seems to agree: Outward Bound will change your life!
