A lovely panda climbs a tree and eats some leaves. Somewhere else, a penguin walks out onto the ice, showing its pretty jacket and beautiful white belly. What do these animals have in common? Well, they are both really cute!

Our attraction to things that are cute is based on science. Cuteness shows youth, harmlessness and need. And it is expressed with features like round faces, button nose, eyes low on the face, and clumsiness. Most of those are common in babies. As babies need our care in order to live on, nature found a way to make sure we look after them. Our brains were wired to recognize cuteness. Babies are clumsy and over time we began to see this as cute.

Cute definitely works. Scientists have shown cuteness makes people feel pleasure the way a good meal does. And it doesn’t just apply to humans and animals. People of all ages are finding cartoons cute little by little. Knowing this, companies are working hard to make cartoons as cute as possible to help sell products.

For example, look at Hello Kitty. She has a big round face with wide eyes, as well as long whiskers and chubby arms. Children and adults love her, and this cute cat can be seen on bags, cell phones, and even truck drivers’ dashboards. This is a fine example of how cuteness can be a commercial success.

Also, anti-smoking commercials with cute cartoons usually work better than those with real actors. It seems we trust those delightful cartoons more than humans. For better or worse, cute is pretty much everywhere we turn.

57. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

A. Culture makes people crazy about things that are cute. B. Cuteness come in many forms, like clumsiness.

C. Humans’ attraction to something cute has to do with its existence.

D. Humans are not the only animals that take care of their young.. 58. According to the reading, which statement is true?

A. Babies can only exist in this world because they are cute. B. Only young people find cartoon characters attractive.

C. Looking at something cute gives us happier than enjoying a meal.

D. The writer uses Hello Kitty to show that cuteness is an important selling point. (D)

How much time do you spend looking at your smartphone, tablet, or computer every day? These devices help us in many ways, but they may also lead to health problems.

Staring at screens for too long can cause eyestrain, which leaves your eyes feeling dry and sore and could also affect your vision. To help your eyes stay health, follow the “20-20-20”rules: every twenty minutes, focus on something twenty feet away for twenty seconds.

Your eyes aren’t the only parts of your body that could suffer from using electronic devices. People who write a lot of text messages can develop an injury called “texting thumb.” The repeated movement of typing with your thumbs can cause thumb and wrist pain and lead to the loss of grip strength. To avoid this, do this exercise: Wrap a rubber band around the tips of your five fingers and open your hand to stretch the rubber band. Repeat this a few times.

Scientific research suggests that electronic devices can also hurt your mind: one of the biggest problems is that using these devices can affect your sleep patterns. Doctors say the light-emitting screens stop you from feeling sleepy. Therefore, they advise people not to use electronic devices for at least one hour before trying to sleep.

Another notable danger is Internet addiction. Many people turn to the Internet to ease feelings of stress, sadness, and loneliness. Over time, they might start to depend on the Net and feel worried if they are not connected. To stop yourself from falling into this kind of trap, limit the amount of time you spend online.

59. Based on the article, why do people turn to the Internet? A. To chat with their friends online.

B. To see what’s new in the world. C. To find information easily. D. To feel less stressed and less sad.

60. According to the reading, which of the following is NOT true? A. Using electronic devices can help you sleep better.

B. Typing too much with your thumb can cause wrist pain. C. Staring at the screen for too long can affect your vision. D. Electronic devices can hurt your body and mind.
