The term nanotechnology refers to science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers, and one nanometer is a billionth of a meter. The advanced technology can be introduced to different fields, especially the realm of medicine. With the technology, nanoparticles are created.

Nanoparticles, a main role in nanotechnology, are used to deliver drugs, heat, light, or other substances to specific types of cells (such as cancer cells). Particles

are engineered so that they are attracted to diseased cells, which allows direct treatment of those cells. The techniques not merely degrades the damage to the health cells surrounding the ill one but also allows for earlier detection of disease.

With the appearance of nanoparticles, many therapy techniques are created. Take targeted heat therapy as an example. It is developed to destroy breast cancer tumors. In this method, nanoparticles circulate through a patient’s bloodstream. Once they find the tumor cells, they accumulate at them and concentrate the heat from infrared light outside the body to destroy the cells with minimal damage to the surrounding healthy cells.

On the other hand, nanoparticles can be applied to diagnose diseases. Researchers at MIT have developed a sensor composed of nanoparticles that can be injected under the skin to monitor the level of nitric oxide in the bloodstream. The level of nitric oxide is important because it indicates inflammation, a red, painful and often swollen area in or on a part of your body, which enables an easy monitoring of inflammatory diseases.

The use of nanotechnology in the field of medicine could revolutionize the way we detect and treat damage to the human body and disease in the future, and many techniques only imagined a few years ago are making remarkable progress towards becoming realities.

56.What is this passage mainly talking about? (A) The current applications of nanotechnology. (B) The historical background of nanotechnology.

The issue that a 4-year-old girl was attacked by a murder has brought the issue of the death penalty in the spotlight once again. The girl, riding a scooter on the street in company with her mother, was then assaulted with a knife cutting her throat without any precursor. In spite of the fact that the doctor tried to save her, she died in the act. To everyone’s outrage, the murder committed the killing during the day with people around and he even has no connection to the family, not to mention the innocent girl he murdered. Instead, it seemed that the killer had chosen his target completely at random. His motive for the cowardly crime remains a mystery, though there are reports that he claimed to have suffered from mental diseases.

This tragedy has staggered and provoked outrage to Taiwanese society. There are calls for governments at every level to improve society safety to better protect vulnerable children against such attacks in the future. After all, this is not the first time for an innocent person to be put to death by a total stranger. In 2012, a 10-year-old boy was murdered at a video game arcade situated near his school in Tainan. Even more recently, a university student went on a bloody rampage and killed several passengers with a knife on a train in Taipei's MRT system.

No matter when or where a terrible crime is committed, a heated debate about whether or not the killer should be condemned to death would arise. Those in favor of the death penalty feel that apart from punishing the offender, it deters others from committing similar crimes, appeases society's anger, and diminishes the financial burden of taxpayers. On the other hand, those opposed question the morality of killing and fear the possibility of sentencing an innocent person to death mistakenly. Nowadays, Taiwan employs the death penalty only against the most serious crimes. Presently, there are 42 prisoners in the “death row” of execution.

61.Compared with other killings, this 4-year-old girl murder case makes people even more concerned because ________.

(A) there was something mysterious involved in this case (B) the killer in this case looked just like a normal guy around

(C) the murdered girl was much well-known than the victims in other cases (D) it happened on the street during the day with a mother accompanying. 62.Based on the murder’s statement in the reports, it could be inferred that

he might defend himself by saying that ________.

(A) he originally intended to kidnap the child but he failed (B) he just wanted to attract public attention on society safety (C) voices in his head told him to commit the crime

(D) he intended to take revenge on the child’s parents 63.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

(A) The killer had followed the girl for days before he struck. (B) The killer broke into the school to reach his victim.

(C) The girl had been dead before she reached the hospital. (D) The girl’s dead body was abandoned on the street.

64.According to the passage, what is the main concern of the anti-death penalty advocates?

(A) The miscarriage of justice.

(B) Being unable to cease public anger.

(C) Promoting criminals to commit similar crimes. (D) The lack of money to sustain the prisoners’ lives.

65.Debates on the death penalty were sparked off again recently probably because ________.

(A) most criminals released from prison committed crimes again (B) of the increase in random killings in the past few years

(C) the capacity of jails in Taiwan can’t accommodate any more prisoners (D) of the economic depression and the expansion of the wealth gap (C)

Filial piety was an integral part of Chinese culture and therefore was embraced by three of China's main religions: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. Among the three, Confucianism, with its well documented social hierarchy, supports the ideals of filial piety the most.

The term filial piety refers to the extreme respect that Chinese children are supposed to be shown their parents. It involves many different things, including taking care of the parents, burying them properly after death, bringing honor to the family, and having a male heir to carry on the family name. Practicing these ideals is a very important part of Chinese culture. The ideal of respecting and behaving properly towards one's parents fits perfectly with Confucianism's ideal of respecting and behaving properly towards all elders.

(5)

Confucius, respect to one's father while he is alive is a given –something that even animals do. But, to be a filial child, one must respect his parents even after their death. Confucius goes on to cite further specific examples of what a filial son should do for his parents. Among them, children should never offend their parents, never speak badly of them, not travel far away without purpose, always be conscious of their parents’ age, and protect them whenever necessary. These things were not all that was required of a filial child. Rather, they were just a few rules that Confucius' disciples felt were important enough to be included in the Analects.

Although filial piety receives a great deal of support and promotion from Confucianism, the influence and prosperity of it is not limited to Confucians – it is a widespread part of Chinese culture and stays in every Chinese mind.

66.What is the best title for this passage? (A) Filial piety in Confucianism.

(B) Three primary religions in China. (C) The approaches to be a Confucian.

(A) how to practice filial piety (B) the meaning of filial piety

(C). the way parents should treat their children.

(D) the book recording Confucian’s thoughts about filial piety.

68.Based on Confucianism, what kind of following behaviors cannot be called filial piety?

(A) Keep parents’ age in mind. (B) Give birth to a male infant.

(C) Respect parents until they expire.

(D) Never offend or speak badly of parents.

69.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true? (A) Filial piety plays a crucial part in Confucianism.

(B) Readers can find all the rules of being filial in the Analects. (C) Filial piety is only believed among the disciples of religions.

(D) The effect of filial piety on Chinese culture is restricted to Confucians.

70. Which of the following is closet in meaning to “elaborate” in the third paragraph? (A) induce

(B) revive (C) erode (D) state
