HKUST Appoints Professor Yi Gang as Adjunct Professor of
Economics
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
today announced the appointment of Prof Yi Gang as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Economics, with effect from July 2008.
Prof Yi is currently Deputy Governor of the People’s Bank of China. He served as the Director-General of the Bank's Department of Monetary Policy from 2003 to 2004 and as Secretary-General of the Monetary Policy Committee from 2002 to 2003.
Before joining the bank as Deputy Secretary-General of the Monetary Policy Committee in 1997, Prof Yi was a professor of economics at Peking University where he founded the China Center of Economic Research in 1994 with a group of pre-eminent scholars, including Prof Justin Yifu Lin.
Prof Yi has published numerous articles and his academic papers have appeared in international publications such as The Journal of Econometrics, the China Economic Review, and Comparative Economic Studies. His research areas focus on money, banking and financial markets in China, and econometrics.
Prof Yi obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was a tenured professor of economics at Indiana University, Indianapolis, USA.
HKUST President Prof Paul Chu said, "Prof Yi is an outstanding scholar and central banker. As a key decision-maker in China’s monetary policies, he has made great contribution to the development and modernization of financial markets in China. I am delighted that Prof Yi has accepted our invitation to be an adjunct professor. This will greatly benefit HKUST's research, and broaden the horizons of our students in the latest development of Chinese economy." In October 2007, Prof Yi delivered a lecture on “China’s Macroeconomy, Financial Situation, and Monetary Policy” to a standing-room-only audience on HKUST campus. In March this year, he appeared as the keynote speaker at a major symposium organized by the HKUST Business School on sub-prime issues in Beijing.
