HKUST Students Place First in Programming

Contest

A team of Computer Science undergraduates at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology took first place in the 4th Scholastic Programming Contest held by ACM Hong Kong Chapter in early July. The team will now represent Hong Kong in an international contest to be held in the United States next March.

Placing

This is the third time that HKUST students have won this territory-wide contest. first in two of the last three years is an indicationof the high quality of the students at this new university.

“Our Computer Science students get a lot of practice in regular classes. The advanced computer network on campus makes it easy for students to have access to computers, and this helps to cultivate their interest in programming,” says Dr Michael Stiber, coach of the team and lecturer in the Department of Computer Science.

The winning team consists of four members: Leung Ka Cheong, Lam Ka PO, Wong Wing Kin and Ngan Sai Fong. “We selected them out of about 20 students and gave them additional training for one month,” says Dr Stiber. “The result is very exciting.”

The Department of Computer Science welcomes sponsors interested in helping to support the students’ participation in the international contest next March. Interested parties please contact Dr Stiber at tel: 358 698 1.
