A special ceremony was held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Friday) to honor its first two honorary fellows, Mr Hans Michael Jebsen, Chairman of Jebsen & Co. Ltd. and Mr Yuk-Lam Lo, President of Bio-Rad Pacific Ltd.

The objective of the Honorary Fellowship is to show the University’s appreciation to members of the community who have made significant contributions to the University. Such contributions may include long service on advisory committees of the University at department, school, or university level; and assistance in the establishment of research centers or facilities. It is also a means of fostering the town-and-gown relationship and of rallying the support of community and business leaders.

Both Mr Hans Michael Jebsen and Mr Yuk-Lam Lo are ardent supporters of the University’s mission to contribute to the economic and social development of Hong Kong and the nation. In 1995, Mr Jebsen established a HK$20 million trust fund to provide scholarships and bursaries to HKUST students. He is currently a member of the advisory board of the School of Business and Management. Mr Lo is well known for his emphasis on the importance of strong ties between universities–HKUST in particular–and industry in Hong Kong, and he is actively involved in a number of industry-related government committees. For example, he is Chairman of the Biotechnology Committee of the Industry and Technology Development Council (ITDC).

While the title of Honorary Fellow is purely honorary and does not carry with it any remuneration or employment benefits, Fellows will in future be invited to attend the annual University Congregation and be listed in the University’s Academic Calendar and other University publications as appropriate.
