SOCIAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE TAKES INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES

Sociologists from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Chinese Mainland will gather together at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on Saturday, 25 November, to throw light on various issues in social research.

Entitled "Crossing Boundaries in Social Research", the Second Annual Meeting of the Hong Kong Sociological Association will provide a forum for academics to exchange views and share ideas on a wide array of social issues that range from social and friendship networks, cultural representation and the mass media, to politics, crime, and the use of information technology in teaching sociology.

The Meeting will be officiated by Prof Otto Lin, HKUST's Vice-President for Research and Development, Prof Ambrose King, HKSA's President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and Prof Lee Ming-kwan, President-Elect of HKSA.

Prof Lin Nan, Vice-President of the American Sociological Association and keynote speaker, will present a lecture on "Social Capital: Social Networks, Civil Engineering, or Trust?". He will be joined by academics from the seven local universities, including Profs Lui Tai-lok and Lau Siu-kai from the CUHK, Profs Wong Siu-lun and Roderic Broadhurst from the University of Hong Kong, Profs Larry Farh and Bian Yanjie from the HKUST, Profs Catherine Chiu and Zang Xiaowei from the City University of Hong Kong, Prof Lee Ming-kwan from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Profs Ruan Danching and Janet Lee Scott from the Hong Kong Baptist

University, and Prof Annie H N Chan from Lingnan University. For the first time since the inauguration of the HKSA in 1998,

postgraduate students who have achieved excellence in research papers will be presented Best Student Thesis Awards at the Meeting.
