Wu, Nan-Wei and Chao-Ching Fu, 2012, “Tile Application as the indication of modernization in colonial Taiwan” Research Paper presented at the conference 2nd International Conference on History and Society Development, Bangkok, Thailand, 24-25 November

Abstract. Surface tile of architecture built during colonial period in Taiwan should be considered as the representation of Taiwanese modernization and social development. The historical and colonial

connection between Taiwan and other country should be linked to reveal the un-recognized

phenomenon. This research will review the historical background of Taiwan and its mother country of colonialism, Japan, as well as the surface tile used for newly built architecture during this period in Taiwan. This research will conclude the tile use for architectural surface was not chosen randomly but actually according to social phenomenon and the choice of the earthquake-proofing material. This could be seen as the modernization of material choice from simple westernization to practical seismic

consideration.

Wu, Nan-Wei and Chao-Ching Fu, 2013, “Creativity in Dynamic Façade of Cultural Heritage”

Research Paper presented at the conference International Conference on Planning and Design, 2013, NCKU, Tainan, Taiwan, 20-24 May.

Abstract. Video projection mapping has become increasingly popular in some important events in recent years. Before the emergence of this kind of projection, media façade screen, which is installed on some building façades, has been used for more than twenty years, since the end of the last century. The screen successfully proves dynamic attraction for the general public to the shown contents. In contrast, video projection mapping is another kind of dynamic façade, but it is not continuously existed on building façade. It was only visible when some specific events taking place. This festive video mapping provides more potential possibilities for creative management of our cultural heritage.

Architectural heritage, as part of cultural heritage, has been protected and conserved for decades since the conservation knowledge has been developed. However, some cultural heritage has experienced some frozen conservation and lack of contact with the general public. This results from educational parts of the conversation purposes. Although to place media façade screen is one of the methods to draw the attentions of general public, its characteristics of the continuous installation can only be suitable for newly built architecture but not cultural heritage, as the installation of the screen might result some damages of the surface of the heritage. Nonetheless, the video projection mapping provides the alternative for this attention capture. The projection provides the dynamic marvel without the danger of

damaging the heritage.

In this paper, several video projection-mapping projects around the world will be examined to see what the contents of these projects were presented and how these projects were operated. Some of the

projects were taken place on a single building with limited times, while some others were practiced on a group of buildings in relatively longer period. This paper will propose several possible methods for this kind of video projection mapping theme in historic cities for more creative management of architectural cultural heritage.

Wu, Nan-Wei and Chao-Ching Fu, 2013, “Material that Talks: material use of architectural surface in semiotic implications” Research Paper presented at the conference 3rd Annual International Conference on Architecture, Athens, Greece, 10-13 June.

Abstract. According to the language of post-modern architecture which Charles Jencks proposed in the 1980s, form has been very crucial for architectural language expression. However, many suggestions also imply that the material which is deployed for building is also significant in the linguistic expression of architecture. Based on this consideration, the material use of architecture will also contain semiotic implications, whether for architects or for social consensus. How the material talks and what it says are two questions that need to be clarified.

To answer these two questions, some empirical works in architecture will be examined to reveal the messages which could be delivered in architectural materials. Before this, semiotic debates in

architecture will be reviewed. Then, two empirical works, one in the West and one in the East, will be considered particularly for their material deployments on the surface (façade). Since the architectural surface is the most tangible part of architecture in terms of material use, the surfaces of both projects will be discussed in detail with their implications and the atmospheres which the materials formulated and created. This paper will conclude with a consideration of the possible implications from these architectural projects and also the different expressions of material use, which will help us to rethink the expression of the material use of architectural surface.

摘要. 臺灣日治時期建築式樣的表現及構造材料的運用受日本明治維新的西化運動影響甚鉅,然 而臺灣(和日本) 常見的面磚貼覆卻不容易在十九至二十世紀前期歐洲興建的建築上看到。這代表

在建築材料的使用方式與概念 上,日本及臺灣並未直接模仿西方建築立面慣用的方式;因此,筆者

認為有必要尋求一個新的視角來看待西化的 過程,本研究試圖以臺灣(和日本)建築立面之面磚使

用為例來 明:西化是一個轉化的開端,而非全盤接受。

為 解 讀 臺 灣 建 築 立 面 材 料 的 使 用 在 現 代 化 過 程 中 的 轉 化 意 義, 本 研 究 以 構 造 遺 存 型 態 學 (skeuomorph)來 解釋日治時期臺灣公共建築面磚的運用。構造遺存型態學以歷時性的角度解釋

構造方式改變時裝飾型態的延 續。此理論基礎可以檢視:臺灣近代建築由磚構造(1910 年代)轉為

鋼筋混擬土構造(1920 年代)時,立面材 料(面磚)使用之角色轉變及其背後之文化背景的意義。

透過上述文化面向的討論,本研究企圖進一步檢視構造遺存型態學的理論,並嘗試提供雙向、回應 西方理 論的研究方式,藉此使西方的理論不再佔據主導的檢視地位、而與臺灣的案例產生對話的 關係,希望在設計者 設計思慮及評論者檢視討論的過程中提供有別於單純沿用西方理論的窠臼之 討論面向。

from Semper’s Bekleidung to empirical projects” Journal of Asian Architecture & Building Engineering vol. 13, No. 1, pp. 9-16, Architectural Institute of Japan (A&HCI).

Abstract. The tectonic idea has frequently been referred to when discussing construction philosophy, and presenting the properties of materials has been considered to be the authentic tectonic expression. In contrast, atectonics has been considered the negation of tectonic expression, which would not only disturb observers' understanding of architectural construction, but also be the converse of the

conventionally authentic philosophy. However, according to Gottfried Semper, the surface cladding is

superior to the tectonic practice, and this has created a distance from the conventions. Moreover, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and their colleagues, as well as Matsunosuke Moriyama, have provided this research with two appropriate examples through which to re-examine the consideration of atectonic expression. This paper will conclude two approaches to re-thinking atectonics: the symbolic expression and the 'ghost architecture' of the contexts. This paper will reveal a different authenticity which can be achieved from atectonic expression, namely the representation of the symbols and the surrounding environment.
