。牛頓科學和微積分要到19世紀 中期才經基督新教教士傳入中 國,遲了差不多兩個世紀

。達爾文在1859年發表進化論後,

基督新教教士又因為信仰而在 一段時期沒有把它傳入中國

。這些新學問在中國繼續被稱為

格致學,到甲午戰爭後才改稱

為科學

江南和英國早期工業化的比較

輕工業

。江南 (人口20百萬[1600] - 36百萬[1850])

- 1600-1850年江南棉紡織業生產擴大一倍多 - 江南從事棉紡織業農戶占總數的2/3以上

- 每年所需要的棉花高達300萬擔

- 絲織業生產規模不過略小於棉紡織業 - 碾米業、釀酒業、榨油業、服裝業及

印刷業等,亦具相當規模

- 19世紀初,江南輕工業的規模已和農業相近

。英國 (人口5百萬[1600] - 22百萬[1850])

- 在都鐸王朝的保護主義措施幫助下,

羊毛紡織業自15世紀開始高速度增長,

在工業革命爆發之前,羊毛紡織業是英 國的最大產業部門

- 從事羊毛紡織業的農戶不及總數的一半 - 工業革命在18世紀中期爆發後,依賴進 口棉花的棉紡織業迅速發展,其淨產值 在19世紀初已超過羊毛紡織業,成爲英 國最重要的產業部門

- 此外,英國還有一些規模較小的絲織業 和麻紡織業、啤酒釀造業、肥皂和爉燭 製造業、皮革和玻璃工業等輕工業

- 總體來説,英國輕工業的規模不及江南

- 英國棉紡織業使用的棉花在19世紀初達

90萬擔,但仍然不及江南的1/3

重工業

。江南

- 工具製造業主要是生産傳統木製的簡單手工 具,很少生産較大的機械,工匠數目很少 - 建築材料工業沒有顯著發展

- 除了一些小規模的採煤業外,江南 基本上沒有煤鐵業

- 造船業有些發展,但江南的海船主要是 沿海航運的沙船,最大的不過375噸,

其數目從明嘉慶年間的1000艘增至清 道光年間的3000艘,總噸位從明朝後期 的5萬噸增至清朝中葉的38萬噸

- 鐵的年產量從1611年的12000噸增至 1760年的30000噸

- 鉛、錫和銅等採冶業也不斷發展

- 煤的總產量從16世紀中的21萬噸快速增長 到18世紀中的470萬噸,在兩個世紀內增 加了23倍

- 在都鐸王朝的「進口替代政策」扶持下,

工具製造業自15世紀開始進展神速,擺脫 了對荷蘭的倚賴,鐵器製造業在16-17世紀 萌芽,鐵匠數目大增,新的工具、零件和 機械不斷出現,到18世紀又發明蒸汽機及 多類新型紡紗機,標誌著機器製造業的逐 步建立

- 建築材料工業亦呈現重大變化,木材逐 漸被磚瓦取代成爲主要建材,石灰產量 同時也大幅增加

- 英國的造船業,在16世紀時還不如江南,

但其後便高速發展,到了1760年,英國商 船總數已超過7000艘,两个世纪内增加了 几近100倍,總噸位在1792年達到154萬噸,

在一個世紀内增加了接近5倍, 遠遠高於 同期江南沙船的總噸位。1740年,英國東 印度公司駛往中國的船隊之標準船 噸位已 接近500噸,超過最大的沙船的噸位

- 很明顯,英國重工業的規模比江南大很多,

重工業的發展速度也比江南快很多;

而重工業的發展,乃是爆發工業革命的

先決條件

江南早期工業‘重輕輕重’的原因

。中國雖然擁有豐富煤礦,但大部分 在北方,江南本身的煤炭資源非常 貧乏,附近省份的產煤量也不大,

除去本地之用以外,可輸往江南的 煤炭極有限,而且價錢昂貴

- 據估計,江南若要建立一個與1720 年英國規模相若的製鐵業,需要15 萬噸煤以上,其價錢超過1000萬兩 白銀,即使附近省份能出產這樣多 的煤,江南亦無能力購買

。江南及鄰近地區的薪炭和木材資源 也不豐富,除去其它用途外,可供 工業使用的薪炭和木材不會很多

。燃料和木材的缺乏對工具和機械製 造業、建築材料業、冶鐵業和造船 業等重工業的發展帶來嚴重負面

影響

。另一方面,江南擁有豐富的人力資 源,勞動人口質素相當高,工藝技 術人才輩出

。輕工業對勞動力的依賴相當高,對 能源的需要卻相對較小,因此勞動 力充足、能源缺乏的江南很自然地 便偏重輕工業的發展,着重技巧而 不着重機器

。輕工業原料方面: 棉花和蠶絲基本

上能夠自給自足,其它原料像稻穀

和大豆等,則可依賴進口

。英國的情形和江南不同,英國早期工 業發達的地區鄰近豐富的煤礦和鐵礦

。作為一個島國,英國依靠海路運輸既 便宜又方便,因此英國同時也能夠從 瑞典等國家進口鐵和從波羅的海一帶 輸入木材

。英國有湍急的河水,有利於發展水力 機械

英國的地利

。這些地利條件成爲英國能夠迅速發展

比利時: 擁有煤田,歐洲第二個出現 工業革命的國家

美 國: 煤鐵礦和木材資源同樣豐富,

但開始時木材比開採煤鐵礦

便宜,因此雖然擁有先進技術

知識,但工業化速度較緩慢
