China Airlines Flight Burns at Naha Airport in Okinawa

assengers and crew onboard China Airlines Flight 120 got a rude surprise when their plane burst into flames shortly after landing at Naha Airport in Okinawa on August 20. After arriving from Taipei at 10:26 a.m., the plane taxied to the gate area where the passengers were to get off the plane. Shortly after this, however, the flight crew was notified that smoke was coming from one of the engines. An emergency evacuation was then performed and everyone was able to get off the plane. While nobody was killed or seriously injured, most of the passengers’ luggage was lost in theensuing inferno. China Airlines has offered compensation to passengers for their destroyed luggage in the amount of NT$1,000 per kilogram. An investigationinto the cause of the fire was quicklyundertakenby Japaneseaviation authorities. It has since beendeterminedthat the blaze was caused by leak in one of the right wing fuel tanks.The accident has proved to be anotherembarrassmentfor China Airlines and has furtherundermined the public’sconfidence in Taiwan’s largest airline. Between 1994 and 2002, China Airlines suffered three major crashes which resulted in the deaths of almost 700 passengers and crew members. These accidents as well as other less serious incidents such as the most recentmishapat Naha Airport in Okinawa haveprompted international aviation authorities to rate China Airlines as one of the least safe major air carriers in Asia. In a face-savingattempt, officials from the airline painted over the destroyed plane’s logo on the destroyed aircraft after receiving approvalfrom airport authorities to do so. Industry experts agree, however, that it will take much more than just a few coats of paint to solve the problems of this troubled airline.

Safety of Chinese Products Questioned
I
n mid-August of this year, Mattel, one of America’s largest toy makers,recalledmillions of Chinese-made toys when it was discovered the paint used on themcontainedhigh levels oflead. Lead paints were banned fordomesticuse in the U.S. in the late 1970s the health problems they can cause in humans, especially children. This latest scandal has caused many Americans to lose confidence in Chinese- manufacturedproducts and is making people the general safety of anythinglabeled“Made in China.”In the pastdecade, China the world’s leading manufacturer of low cost goods. China’smassive pool of cheap labor enables manufacturers in the country to produce goods for money than those that are manufactured in developed countries. In fact, the largestretail chainin the United States, Wal-Mart, gets over 80% of itsinventoryfrom Chinese manufacturers. In recent months, however, there has been story after story of Chinese-made products on American store shelves that do not meet basic American health and safety standards. The Mattel toy recall was preceded by recalls of products as toothpaste, fish products, and pet food. In each of these recalls, illegal toxic chemicals were found to be in the products. These scandals are leading to abacklashin America some consumers are choosing not to buy certain goods made in China for fear that they might be dangerous. In an attempt toreassureconsumers that their products are safe, Chinese officials claim that the recallsrepresent only a tiny fraction of all the goods from China each month. If there are more scandals such as these, however, American consumers may soon decide that the cheapest price is not necessarily the best price.
