The Education Bureau (EDB) encourages schools to use multiple methods such as behavioral checklists, performance tasks, teacher/parent/peer observation, etc. to identify gifted/more able students. In order to facilitate teachers to use performance tasks to identify gifted/more able students, a resource package on “Using STEM Education Related Performance Tasks to Identify Gifted/More Able Students” has been developed by the EDB in collaboration with The University of Hong Kong. Teachers may make use of the resource package on need basis to identify gifted/more able students for appropriate learning oppor- tunities in and outside the classroom to cater for their learning needs.

This Resource Package consists of ten performance tasks designed by the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong and piloted by schools.

These tasks covered STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education related academic disciplines. Each performance task consists of hands-on activities that are devised to assess students’ science process skills and problem-solving skills. Hence, students are not required to possess related prior knowledge before carrying out the performance task. Target users of the resource package are secondary school teachers and the related performance tasks are of secondary 2 to 3 level. The resource package consists of the Teacher’s version and Student’s version. The Teacher’s version includes detailed information about the performance tasks, suggested answers, samples of students’

answers and the assessment rubrics for school reference.
