People with positive emotional wellness can function independently. They can think for themselves, make decisions, plan their lives, and follow through with their plans. Conversely, people who have difficulty making decisions are often immature and insecure. They are afraid to face the consequences of the decisions they make, so they make as few decisions as possible. Growth involves making mistakes as well as achieving success. Our mistakes are best viewed as learning experiences. We must take some risks in order to live our lives most fully.

Perhaps it will be easier to understand the nature and function of empathic listening if we contrast it to deliberative listening. When we make a definite “deliberate” attempt to hear information, analyze it, recall it at a later time and draw conclusions from it, we are listening deliberatively. This is the way most of us listen because this is the way we have been trained.

This type of listening is appropriate in lecture-based education system where the first priority is to critically analyze the speaker’s content.

In empathic listening the objective is also understanding, but the first priority is different.

Because empathic listening is transactional, the listener’s first priority is to understand the communicator. We listen to what is being communicated not just by the words but by the other person’s facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures, posture, and body motion.
