The 1999/2000-based Consumer Price Index (CPI) has become available since January 2001, the consumption pattern is derived from the Household Budget Survey 98/99. In this CPI series, housing rent includes both private and welfare housing.
Furthermore, CPI(A) relates to 54% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of MOP3,000 to MOP9,999; CPI(B) accounts for 26% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of MOP10,000 to MOP19,999.

The Composite CPI of April 2003 was 93.76, equivalent to a decrease of 0.06% over the previous month. Due to falling prices in fish and other seafood, fresh vegetables, meals bought away from home, gasoline, air tickets and jewellery, the indices of FOODSTUFFS AND BEVERAGES, TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS fell by the same rate of 0.53%, and OTHER GOODS AND SERVICES declined by 0.15%. On the other hand, rising prices in new arrivals of summer clothing, men’s and women’s footwear and the expiry of waiver of welfare housing rentals by the Housing Institute after the first quarter of 2003 led to increases in the indices of CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR (+1.67%) and RENT AND HOUSING EXPENSES (+0.35%).
The Composite CPI fell by 1.35% in April 2003 over the same month of 2002. The decline in the annual rate of change has been narrowing since October 2002. To the period ended April 2003, the Composite CPI decreased by 2.19%. The Composite CPI for January to April 2003 also dropped by 1.54% over the same period of 2002.
CPI(A) rose by 0.01%, while CPI(B) fell by 0.16% respectively over March 2003.
