What Can They Do?

Narrator : Mum and Dad are not at home. The children are helping with the housework. What are they doing?

Lily : Who can cook? Dad will come back from work. We should have the dinner ready before he comes home.

Tom : Let me try. Mum taught me to make pizza and pasta before. I think I remember the steps.

Joe : Forget it, Tom! The pizza and pasta you made last time all went into the rubbish bin.

Tom : At least I’ve cooked once, but you’ve never cooked.

Lily : That’s OK, Tom. What about you, Joe? Can you cook?

Joe : No.

Lily : Neither can I. Tom is our only choice.

Tom : Haha ... Right! I have to gather the ingredients now.

[Tom goes into the kitchen.]

Joe : What shall we do then?

Lily : Let’s wash the clothes first. The basket is full of dirty clothes. Do you know how to start the washing machine?

Joe : Yes, I do.

Uncle Jack’s Secret

Uncle Jack was born into a poor family in England in the 1950s. English is his first language, so he can speak English perfectly. But Uncle Jack has a secret – he cannot read or write at all.
