The Study of Teaching the Speed Unit of the Sixth Grade at

Elementary School by LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT

Abstract

The mathematics of the senior grades is abstract and difficult to learn for most elementary school seniors. According to Dr. Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive

development, they can‘t realize the essence of mathematics through lecturing well because they are not possessed of abstract conceptions during this age. In this study, we attempt to teach the speed unit from the sixth grade textbook as a sample by making use of LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT, and to develop a teaching plan of the technology into teaching. The purpose of this study is to use LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT into teaching to get effects.

The research is a case study whose target audience is a class of the sixth grade students at a primary school located in an isolated place, Pingtung County. The students had a lesson for speed. The author observed in the class, obtained the

teaching results of the unit of speed through LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT and had an interview with the students, the teacher and the observers about their opinion on the teaching procedure. The research team integrated and analyzed collected data.

As the following results: 1. It is easy to attract students to pay attention on teaching by using LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT during mathematic class, then the students are more than willing to learn mathematic. 2. The students can help each others to reach the goal the teacher expected via cooperative learning. 3. Through the practice and exercise, the students surely realize the concept of speed more than before.
