Are you a smartphone addict? Are you checking your inbox every five minutes?

Do you find yourself always using your cell phone while on vacation or checking your facebook all the time even during your anniversary dinner? If you answer "yes"

to any of these questions, you might be a smartphone addict.

For most of us, checking the inbox is almost as natural as breathing. Though email is an essential communication tool in the modern working world, it is also a distraction. And, let's face it: email is appealing. Once in a while you'll open your inbox and find something truly exciting. For example, you've got a new job, or your good friend is getting married. There's no way to predict when you'll get those messages. This is why a smartphone is not only convenient but also necessary.

However, it's easy to quickly lose control of your life and fall into smartphone addiction. Experts say that as many as 6 percent of smartphone users could be considered addicts. According to a Rutgers University study, being addicted to your smartphone is similar to being addicted to drugs. It's a tough habit to break. Forty- nine percent of people say they keep their email devices nearby when they sleep, so they can listen for new messages.

But how do you cure smartphone addiction? First, admit that your phone is managing you. Then try telling your colleagues that you're only checking your email at certain times of the day then they don't wonder why they didn't get the instant response that they're used to. Step out of the office for some fresh air occasionally.

Instead of responding to colleague's email with another email, go over and tell him or her the message face-to-face. Finally, keep your inbox tidy. Delete all messages you no longer need.

The term "Sandwich Generation" refers to a generation that cares for parents and children at the same time. Members of today's sandwich generation often face difficulties in managing time and money well, and often describe themselves as being pulled in a variety of directions. It is not uncommon for members of this generation to experience emotional and marriage problems due to the stresses caused by the extent of their responsibilities.

The number of Americans aged 65 and older is expected to increase from 40 million in 2010 to over 88 million by 2050, doubling the ranks of those experiencing stressful responsibilities. More Americans than ever are taking care of their parents while raising their own children. The trend is leaving some families suffering emotionally and financially, but there are steps people can take to make living in the

"sandwich generation" easier and to relieve their burden on time and finances.

First, it is very important to communicate with parents. Potential issues should be discussed before they arise. Second, it is all too easy to burn yourself out with the family duties. Try to share the responsibilities; one person alone should not be responsible for all the duties. Third, assisted living care and long-term care are very expensive. Contact state and local organizations for elder-care assistance. Also, do not forget to pay yourself first. Fund your own financial planning goals, and save for retirement.

56. Which of the following statements can best describe the situation of the

"sandwich generation"?

(A) One's parent is ill with cancer and his children are still young.

(B) An old couple have no kids to take care of them.

(C) A single father refuses to raise his children.

(D) A 50-year-old man would rather live with his parents than get married.

57. Which of the following words is closest in meaning to the word "relieve"?

(A) worsen (B) increase (C) ease (D) confuse

(14)

58. What does the underlined sentence in the 2nd paragraph mean?

(A) Don't judge a person by his appearance.

(B) Rolling stones gather no moss.

(C) Pay attention to the problems in advance.

(D) Accept the fact that no one can live forever.

59. Based on all the suggestions given by the author to the sandwich generation, who are most often ignored?

(A) Their parents. (B) Their children.

(C) Their grandchildren. (D) Themselves.

60. "The number of people aged 65 and older is expected to increase" means . (A) more people can share the responsibilities of taking care of old people

(B) more people will become members of the sandwich generation

(C) more people will devote their time and money to educating their children (D) more people will sacrifice their family life to make extra money
